Listening to Dennis describe how John Thaw was instrumental in giving him more of an equal role in The Sweeney, you can't help but think of how the reverse happened with Minder, a show written for Waterman but pretty much taken over by his co-star. I vaguely remember Dennis saying in an interview many years ago, that it became 'The Arthur Daley Show.' Perhaps that was one of the reasons Dennis left the series eventually ? Charles

Looks like you couldn't move for celebs in Torbay, I wonder if Tarby ever visited? Looks a nice place, though everywhere looked so much better than it does now on those old newsreels.

Charles Another thing I read ( I think it was an interview with DW ) that put Cole in a bit of a selfish light- apparently in the fairly early years of Minder Cole considered not doing any more series, when DW made the point that he needed the money Cole took a bit of an 'I'm alright Jack' attitude, saying that he was secure financially so he could choose not to continue the series if he wished.
Must be difficult being in a show where your future in it depends on another actor, I think it's clear that Dennis wanted The Sweeney to continue longer. He can't grumble though, he had a long run with Minder, then Stay Lucky & other shows.

I often think that the people seem to look healthier and happier in these old newsreels too.

Sam. Saw one guy today where his whole forearm was just solid blue, god knows how long that took to do. Or why he did it.

Charles Yes i think in ReMinder Dennis says (Minder) it had become the Arthur Daley comedy hour and was no longer the gritty drama it was intended to be as devised by Leon Griffiths.

Came across this edition of 'Punchlines' featuring Diana Dors & Kenny Lynch.
Look out for this if there are any more editions of 'It Was Alright In The 1980s', after the obligatory racial jokes at Lynchie's expense, did Lennie Bennett really say he'd rather be bald than Black to Lynchie? Yes, he did ( 3 mins in ) Also starring Operation Yewtree's Freddie Starr dressed as a Nazi.

Cartman mentioned Peter Rachman, the notorious landlord, in another thread. This made me think of Nicholas Hoogstraten ( or Van Hoogstraten ), another infamous landlord. Once a well known figure in Britain he's featured in several tv documentaries. He appears on an edition of Channel 4's discussion show 'After Dark' alongside another nefarious character, Blackpool FC's Owen Oyston, you can see it on youtube.
A sinister but strangely likeable character, he had ( maybe still has ) several African 'wives' & lives in Zimbabwe where he owns ( according to wikipedia ) 1,600 square miles of land. This is a World In Action from 1988-

Yes I've heard of van Hoogstraten, he comes across as some kind of Bond villain. He started a huge mansion somewhere near Brighton which now is, apparently abandoned.
