Sorry that the titles a bit vague but I've no idea what it was called or who was in it. It might have been written by Jack Rosenthal, but I'm not sure. It was on, I think Channel 4, sometime in the 90s and I remember enjoying it.
It was about this Jewish lad from Manchester who was doing national service in the mid 50s and he was posted to Germany, which he wasn't keen on, understandably, and was assigned to some sort of monitoring unit listening to Russian radio traffic. He found it boring and passed the time with his two interests, Manchester United and Marylin Monroe! In some scenes, he would imagine Marylin talking to him about United!
At the end of the play, it moved to his Russian equivalent who was equally bored and daydreaming. Anyone remember this, Sparky for example, who seems to be very well informed on this kind of stuff?

I vaguely remember this something like this.
With the Jewish Angle; it's possible Jack Rosentahl wrote it. Though can't think what it was.
Jack did do an adaptation of "And a Nightingale Sang" in the 1980s, which I think was on C4. In the mid 80s he also wrote "The Devil's Lieutenant" which was set Pre WW1.
Will have a think!
