Things I don't get:
Whistling.
I've never been one for it, never enjoyed hearing it, always found the sound to be piercing, and never understood why people think that their ability to whistle can provide any fulfilling entertainment for those around. Tunes are seldom recognisable and if you actually recognize it then the whistler is more often than not completely tone deaf.
There is a bloke in our office that started it today, I've no idea what the tune was, but it was instantly irritating and I was not the only one to think that way. Thankfully he gave up after the first tune but it was like being subjected to the very worst ring-tone and a persistent caller.
The one allowance I will make however, is for the humorous little whistle that we used to hear from Tom Good in The Good Life - which is why whistling is in this thread and not Room 101.
Sam I'm easy with it Sam but don't really do it to be honest.

Things I don't get:
Whistling. Exactly!
It easier to decipher those codes Broadcast on the Number Stations by various government intelligence operations.
Each whistler should begin their tune with a few bars of the "Lincolnshire Poacher" (as MI5 do/did on their broadcasts!).
I take it you aren't a Roger Whittaker fan then Sam?

Corona Virus covid 19. What's your opinion on the hysteria surrounding this virus. Is it OTT the way authorities have acted so far or plan to do here? Or is it a knee jerk reation? Italy has just announced it is shutting its education facilities down.

I think it's odd Del that there hasn't been ( to my knowledge ) a public information film or similar shown on primetime tv giving the facts about the virus. All the info has been media driven so far & of course they love to dramatise & distort things. Flu kills thousands of vulnerable people in the UK every year, just not being warm enough can kill the elderly, then look at malaria- hundreds of thousands in the developing World die every year from this preventable disease. Perspective & common sense are what's required, we won't get them from the media.
As for wearing masks, this is common practice in countries like Japan when a person has a cold or flu, except it's the person *with flu* who wears the mask to both contain his germs & alert others to the fact that he has flu/cold. I don't think we're taught basic hygeine enough over here, people think of thorough handwashing as something hospital or McDonalds workers do & how often do you see people cough & sneeze without doing it into their elbow or a handkerchief?
Yes, I think the threat has been massively exaggerated by the media & not nearly enough has been done by the government to allay the public's fears. I expect we'll look back on this as we did at the millenium bug...I hope.

There was a very crude (and short) Public Information film on TV this morning - which basically told us to Wash our hands. They'd have been better showing the old Schools Programmes about Health & Wellbeing......
I think a lot of it (again) has been blown out of proportion by the good old Media.
But I've heard cases of people stockpiling food and supplies to "Protect & Survive" standards.... Thing is, when any Government makes any plans for such situations, they have to consider the worse case scenario. Even if it would never reach that.
The bit that makes me laugh is the BBCs Reporting - it seems to be more concerned about Big Corporate companies profit margins being affected. F**k them, our health is more important.
Also - I notice there is conflicting advice from the Government too - they are saying that Chilren up to their late Teens are at less risk, and are pretty safe. On the other hand -there is talk of closing schools down?
One newspaper was reporting Town & City Lockdowns, and the army on the streets using Martial Law.....
WTF?
God knows what would happen if we were in a War situation....
"Millenium Bug" - I saw what you did there Arthur!!

Funny isn't it, how many UK homes have got a poster, cushion or tea towel with 'keep calm & carry on' written on it? Instead of heeding that advice they're all panic buying hand sanitiser

Instead of heeding that advice they're all panic buying hand sanitiser That is a good point. Another thing too - we have one newspaper reporting that the Virus originated from China - via a Snake..... another via Meat on a Market and another saying China "did it on purpose" because of the spat over the "Huwawi" (sorry about the spelling) saga.... Seriously - what plans do we have in place for (say) a Terrorist Biological attack?
If we faf about with this, it doesn't give me much hope for something more sinister. Better keep washing my hands....

True, it's far more surprising that we've lasted this long as a species considering both the poor hygeine in some countries & the ease with which these things take root & spread & the possibility of germs & gasses being used as a weapon.

Yes, agree with every word there Arthur
Makes me wonder what it would be like if similar levels of effort and urgency were expended on the climate crisis which, unlike the Coronavirus is not a relatively minor and short term threat. Why are our priorities so confused?
Plus, how many people are going to die from heart attacks, strokes, cancer etc relative to Covid-19?
Most of the main current causes of premature death could be minimised, if not eradicated, via dietary and lifestyle changes
Call me a cynic but if Big Pharma could monetise changing people's diets and lifestyles we'd virtually eradicate the big killers in the developed world.
