First record I ever owned was the cassette version of this '66 Stones compilation, given to me by my Mum when I was a nipper... First vinyl LP I ever bought with my own money was their 'Beggars Banquet' album from '68... When people complained about the original 'toilet' cover Decca re-issued it with a new one which was considered a rip off of The Beatles White Album cover at the time. The Stones had finished the album in July and it was ready for release in August but the faffing about over the cover meant it wasn't released until December, meanwhile The Beatles managed to get their White Album into the shops in November, hence why some folk thought The Stones were ripping off The Beatles ... The gatefold photo was part of a session which took place in an old stately home in Derbyshire in July '68, the band raced each other up the M1 from London in Keiths Bentley S3, famously called 'The Blue Lena' and in Charlie's Mercedes...

I think it was UB40 Signing Off The album sleeve was made to look like the Unemployment Benefits card you got when you signed on the dole. It was stamped "Signed Off" when you eventually found employment (which in Thatcher's Britain was a impossibility)

My Mum got me I'd like to teach the world to sing by The New Seekers, Jesus that seems so embarrassing to have that as your first lp.Think I had a crush on Lyn Paul. However I did buy Queen's first album with my pocket money so The New Seekers don't count, right lads!!!

The first album that I'd bought with my own money was Quo by Status Quo:
Mum and dad only had an old "Radiogram" at the time and I played it over and over until I'd saved up enough to buy my own hi-fi for my room. By that time the record was knackered from the large needle on the Radiogram and it crackled and hissed every time I played it.
Sam.
