By strange coincidence tonight's Armchair Theatre play, just finished on talkingpicturestv, was 'Competition'. Not only does it feature a poster advertising McManus & Masambula, it was written by Douglas Livingstone who as an actor appeared in 3 Play For Today's alongside Brian Glover & Ray Mort as the trio of Yorkshire miners Art, Ern & Abe.

The tag bouts were always fun.
Here's Vic Faulkner & Bert Royal (the "fabulous Royals") vs Peter Lapaque & Tommy Lorne (aka the "outrageous rockers")...

Remember watching the wrestling on World Of Sport on Saturday afternoon. My gran taught me how to boo at certain characters she didn't like. It was great fun as a youngster. The fitness levels of some of the wrestlers was very 70s too. Big men were fat, not the muscle bound type of today as seen on American wrestling. The English fatties lived far longer lives than many of their across the pond counterparts. Many of whom died at an early age.

I remember watching this one back in the 80's!
What were they thinking with that match up?...

Dale Martin Promotions (who set up most of these bouts) have some kind of Youtube channel.
Not sure if it is a legitimate Dale Martin youtube channel, or a fan channel. Lots of bouts on here.
Who said being fat was unhealthy?

Interestingly, Giant Haystacks copied an American wrestler called Haystacks Calhoun, if you google Calhoun you'll see the similarity.
Both Haystacks died in their 50s but fat people can live long lives, the huge Sweeney actor Willoughby Goddard lived to be 81. Steroid abuse is undoubtedly the main cause of death for American wrestlers.

I saw Haystacks once, driving along Chapel Street in Salford, just coming up to some lights. The car (I think it was a Hillman Hunter) was leaning heavily towards the drivers side.
I also saw Big Daddy wrestling at leisure centre in Bury, as usual, he was in a tag team with this little bloke, who got battered by the other two, then Daddy came into the ring and fell on the both. His real name was Shirley Crabtree BTW.

A bit like Big Daddy in a Mini Cooper.

I remember wrestling event posters on holiday like down at Torquay in the late 70's. We'd go past them and at one picture (not sure it might have been Big Daddy), my brother pointed and said "Stretch Armstrong"! Lol! (That was a toy doll available then and his arms and legs stretched when you pulled them. He was made to look like a wrestler with boxer shorts on and big physique).
Another name on the posters was Jon Cortez, he was the first winner of the ITV Golden Gown award. Did 23 matches since his debut in 1960.

Big Daddy and Haystacks were initially a tag team called The Giants. I might be wrong on this but I think Daddy packed in after a wrestler called King Kong Kirk he had just pinned to the floor had a heart attack and died in the ring.
My favourite wrestler was Rollerball Rocco, I thought he was very skilful and had great gymnastic ability, he could actually wrestle and wasn't just a big daft bloke.
