Interestingly, Giant Haystacks copied an American wrestler called Haystacks Calhoun, if you google Calhoun you'll see the similarity. Both Haystacks died in their 50s but fat people can live long lives, the huge Sweeney actor Willoughby Goddard lived to be 81. Steroid abuse is undoubtedly the main cause of death for American wrestlers.
Yes there have been several deaths of the American wrestlers in their 40s.

Very true Del.
Tried to post a link of Jesse Ventura in that crap film The Repossessed but the only one on YT is in French... anyway it was along the lines of 'Steroids aren't used anymore in Wrestling are they Jesse?'.... 'Or any less Mean Gene!'

King Kong Kirk's only film appearance was in an Italian comedy called 'I'm For The Hippopotamus', starring Bud Spencer & Terence Hill, an Italian duo known for their comedy Westerns ( Hill was in Sergio Leone's 'My Name Is Nobody' ). He also appeared in one episode of a German light entertainment tv show under the name 'Kojak Kirk' ( on account of his bald head ).

I've been watching episodes of the Hylda Baker sitcom 'Not On Your Nellie' over the last week, here's a clip featuring Brian Glover & Kent Walton. Btw, the actor sat next to Hylda Baker is called David Rayner & was the brother of tv agony aunt Claire Rayner.

Great clip Arthur. Sure this wasn't shot in a UK town centre at kicking out time on a Saturday night?

4.0pm on Saturday afternoons, sat with a huge bag of those crisps Marks and Spencer used to sell, watching the greats battle it out. Unfortunately I stopped watching in the early 80s when Big Daddy seemed to be on every week following the same "script". It was good to relive the days again when The Wrestling Channel appeared for a few years in the mid-2000's showing the unedited bouts from the 70s.
Simon Garfield's book is a good read and Kendo Nagasaki's recent autobiography ("The Man Behind The Mask") is also worth checking out.
Some of the big names of the golden era appeared in an episode of the Granada series "Send In The Girls" in 1978. The episode "The Wild Bunch" starred and was written by Brian Glover with Haystacks, Jim Breaks, Kendo Nagasaki, Brian Maxine trying out their acting skills alongside Michael Elphick, Annie Ross and Floella Benjamin. It's quite a funny episode, though very much of its time - even the theme music !

Great find Nightfly, I'll look forward to watching that later tonight.
Brian Glover wrote another tv play with a wrestling theme, 'Death Angel' ( also the name used for Kendo Nagasaki's character in 'The Wild Bunch' )
