Here we have a lesson on how to screw up a good song from a hugely respected artist:

Another cover version for Room 101 is this 1997 attempt at Shalamar's classic 1982 hit Vi Its not terrible and is in the same arrangement but its just a straight up copy that adds nothing at all to the original. The only good thing for covers like this are to introduce a younger audience to the original artists and other music from an earlier era. Also the writer gets paid again. Here we have a lesson on how to screw up a good song from a hugely respected artist: Sam. As for this one I could only stand a third of it before having to turn it off. A stinking version.

Never really got that Nu Metal/Rap Metal thing which was around late '90's / early 2000's... but each to their own!

Here's another abomination although Dirty Epic will probably prefer the cover:
Original:
And the second rate copy:
Sam.

I remember hearing the cover before I knew who the original was. In the pre internet days old stuff from the 60s and 70s was hardly was heard on air. You had Radio 2 perhaps or Capitol Gold in London if you wanted to catch some classics. I quite liked this cover at the time as it garnered a lot of radio play. Was this from 1992 possibly 93? Listening to it again it falls into the same category as the Kavana track above in that it does nowt really to improve the song and the only positives really was a pay day for the writer and an introduction for those whom missed it first time around. It attempts to bring the contemporary 90s dance sound to the track (In a kind of M People way) and it doesn't really work that well with this one. I'd only bother with the original these days.
I'm quite sure Undercover did a copy of Baker Street.... I'll check

The answer is yes they did!
This cover is a better example of trying to update a track with the current general sound. It works a bit with this track and I can see why it sold a lot and went top ten. The updating concept certainly works better on this record than the Andrew Gold number. Does it improve the track ? No, but then I honestly think Baker Street is a very tricky record to cover and bands should steer clear of it. Take the Foo Fighters version for example, They added the contemporary grunge sound to it and the result is its inferior in every department and doesn't work at all. What do you guys think ?
