- Diana's death in Paris
- Man on the moon (yes... Neil Armstrong and co as well as one of the Wetherspoons pubs I know opening up)

I remember the first night of the Allied bombing of Iraq dubbed 'Operation Desert Storm' on 16th January 1991, only because I was watching the film 'Villain' on BBC1 ( it started at 11.30pm ) & it was interrupted about 30 mins in to show coverage of the bombing. I remember being quite annoyed that they'd stopped the film, obviously not as annoyed as the people being bombed but annoyed all the same. I stayed up to watch the 'live bombing', probably the first time I'd seen a place being bombed as it happened, I think I started to think 'why am I watching this?' & turned it off in distaste. Come to think of it, I can't recall live coverage of conflicts as they happen being televised since, there was something gung ho about the coverage that seemed wrong.
I read that Ray Winstone was doing the same & he mentioned it to Ian McShane when he did the film '44 Inch Chest'.

As far back as I can remember:
The Hot Summer of '76 in the UK Jimmy Carter replacing Ford in the US White House Elvis Presley's death Iranian revolution and deposing of the Shah - 1979 Ronald Regans US election victory Ronald Regans assassination attempt John Lennon's murder The Pope's assassination attempt Brixton and Toxteth riots Charles and Diana wedding Falklands war Miners strike Brighton Hotel Bombing Michael Buerk's report on Ethiopian famine Bradford City Stadium fire Live Aid '85 Great Storm in UK '87 Hillsborough Berlin Wall falling Ceaucesceaus overthrowing in Romania same year as Berlin Mrs Thatchers resignation
Well that's 1976-90 - probably more if I think about it.

1999 to 2000 I've mentioned this on the music thread with the discussion of Prince's 1999 but a world event was the changing of the year 1999 to 2000. Remember the dire end of the world propositions and how the stock exchange and the computer business world was deemed to collapse once the clock struck midnight. We all laugh now of course but the at the start of 1999 I worked in banking (testing software, evaluating staff suggestions. Gee when I look back now that was a good job, though then I got bored with it) and the main concern was that all our systems (monthly bank transfers, loans) were set with 31.12.99 as their expiry date. No one had the foresight when they developed the software to envision the time that we would go to the year 2000. The panic and meetings with boffins about what would happen if the computer calendar moved from 99 to 00 was huge as they thought the computer system would view it as 1900 and no one knew what would happen ! The amount of work done that year to convert everything to four digit years was incredible. As we know thankfully at midnight nothing in the world collapsed.
