I seem to remember that there was an ominous warning to people 'in high buildings' by whoever claimed responsibility for 9/11. My brother lives in a block of flats in Bethnal Green ( it's the tower block that can be seen in the Minder episode where Stupid Hawes swaps goldfish for clothes ) & he was understandably a bit worried at the time.

I was on holiday in Scotland with Bolly when news broke about Diana. I was shocked at the news but it paled alongside the news of 9/11 as it broke while I was working on an F1 development factory. My Dad called me to give a running commentary as it unfolded on the news. THe whole workplace ground to a stunned halt. Gene. I had just got up on that Sunday Morning in '97 and as usual I turned on the BBC text for the latest news before I left to work an overtime stint at my local Airport Royal Mail depot. The news was a great shock and I went upstairs to tell the wife before I left for work. What a sad week that was. Strangely enough we always seemed to be on holiday at other big events such as 9/11 we were in Minehead at that time. Charles.

With 9/11 I didn't know till I switched the news on when I got home from work. Nobody knew at all during the day as there was no internet access on mobile phones and we had no internet in the office I was working at the time. I switched on the TV to an urgent news item and the news didn't stop. Took a while before the full extent of the attack hit home to me. Some media admitted they thought it was a tragic accident when the first tower was hit, but then........

Noticed that one of Britain's most notorious serial murderers Dennis Nilsen died yesterday, imprisoned in 1983 for murdering at least 12 men ( he was convicted of killing six but claimed to have killed 15 ) over a 5 year period & serving a whole life sentence. I don't remember coverage of the events but I have read Brian Masters book on Nilsen 'Killing For Company'. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44097196

Yes I don't remember much about Dennis Nilsen at the time either. Unlike Peter Sutcliffe which was a major news story, as were his killings in the late 70s.
On Diana, I was in bed on the Sunday morning when it happened and as I had no internet then, the first I heard was when I put the telly on at about half ten. 9/11 happened when I was at work and we had a TV in the kitchen at the office so we all spent most of the day watching with disbelief, wondering where the events would lead us.

Speaking of Dennis Nilsen, Donald Neilson was another who served a life term for the murders of 4 people in a spate of robberies & a botched kidnapping in the early 70s. Dubbed 'The Black Panther' by the press, it's likely that 'On The Run' writer Roger Marshall in part based Tim 'The Leopard' Cook on the ex soldier Neilson. It may be a coincidence but they look very similar & although the film of Neilson's crimes 'The Black Panther' came a year after On The Run, there are scenes in the film of Neilson holing up outdoors & doing press ups that bear a strong resemblance to the Sweeney episode.
Continuing the theme of murderers, I saw some of a documentary last night on Meghan Markle's family in which her half brother maintains their family is related to a mass murderer responsible for up to 200 victims. He also made a claim that the relative may have been Jack the Ripper.

I remember being up late at night (around 11pm Aust. time) watching the Muhammad Ali special 'When we were kings'. I was studying a subject called 'Sport and Society'. This was the equivalent time to around 9am in New York so when the channel interrupted the show with reports, then the live footage, I sat and watched until the early hours of the morning. I woke up my sleeping partner at the time. Some of the most shocking live tv footage ever. With Diana's car accident it was around lunchtime in Australia so radio reports were heard while I was at a bbq. Initially everyone said Nah she'll be ok, she'll get the best doctors and care. Big surprise when it turned out to be fatal.

A huge shock to everyone. A couple of the girls in my lads class at school like Ariana and we were worried that they might have been there.
