Actually the odometer only shows 2667 miles? Oh, ok, they changed the speedo. Yes, it had a speedo change at 1600 miles, I presume it seized up from lack of use! The Saint Or too noisy, like the clock!!

Beautiful motor, gorgeous colour . Villain Villain, that big round thing that is attached to a shaft coming up from under the dashboard, you turn that and it makes the vehicle go left and right. Just in case you were wondering.

My father in law owned a Silver Shadow 2 in the 80s. The lucky sod had his own petrol station to go with it though I'll try to dig out some photo's of it. Seem to remember it was a sky blue hue.

I've just had another quick skim of the Silver Shadows and Bentley T1 / T2s currently for sale on carandclassic.com, the asking prices vary quite a lot for what *look* like cars in similar condition to each other. I've been reading up on them lately too, it's clear they can be highly complicated motors to keep the maintenance up on, especially so with regard to the braking and suspension systems, I can see why so many of them have had big bills down the years. I suppose I'm stating the obvious on that score but it makes you wonder how some of the £5k ex-wedding cars that you sometimes see for sale make it through another MOT! There are still vast numbers of Shadows on the roads but equally there must be a decent supply of parts donors scattered about the country. Another dip into c&c.com brings up this very tidy early Series 3 XJ6, it has a nice 'Arthur Daley' vibe to it... www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1176467 . A mate at work has a Daimler badged version of the same age which he's spent a fair old wedge on recently but having seen it in the flesh I have to admit I've not given the S3 XJs the attention they deserve until now, the build quality is generally much better than the Series 2s of the BL period and they're really good value if you find the right one. The only thing that grates with me though is the large black bumpers, but that's just down to personal taste and preferring the chrome of the earlier XJs. This '67 Rover P5 3-litre Mk3 Saloon looks good value too, might need some tidying up here and there but it's a lot of motor for £3k... www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1186920 … it's quite rare too, as only 3,919 Mk3 Saloons were built as 'run out' models in '66 and '67 to keep the dealerships busy while the P5B V8 models were being developed at Solihull. Bit more of a bank managers car than a Sweeney-esque getaway motor, but nice all the same. Villain

Very big bills on these cars are often a catch up for maintenance that has been missed over the years. Buying a cheap Rolls or Bentley often results in it becoming an expensive one when all that missed maintenance is addressed. Like with most things you get what you pay for, but this is especially true when buying an old Rolls or Bentley. The Saint

This looks like a lovely early Silver Spirit, with only 28k miles from new and only 11k since 1985! I think the magnolia paintwork suits the lines of the car. Silver Spirits currently offer much better value for money than Silver Shadows in equivalent condition. Silver Spirit

I'm not massively keen on the Silver Spirit personally, I always thought it looked like an 80s Chevy or Cadillac, preferred the Shadow, and, of those, I liked the early series 1, 65-77 cars best
