This morning, at one of the garages I deliver to, an immaculate red, Y regd Cortina 1.6 GL. It was just superb and reminded me of what a great car they are

Nice W regd Mini today, all original, in blue and an Imp, also blue. Talking a bit about Chrysler/Talbot, a bloke who works at our place used to be a mechanic in the 70s and 80s, at Tom Garners in Manchester who were a Chrysler dealer. He wasn't keen on Imps, but he thought that the Chrysler Sunbeam, Avenger and Hunter were sound cars, if a bit basic. The French derived ones, like the Alpine, Solara and Horizon and Simcas, on the other hand, he said were garbage. Very poor quality, the wiring was suspect, and, apparently, huge discounts had to be given just to sell them

Completely unexpected last Sunday, a mid-blue V reg (79/80) mini van passed me, having clocked-up approximately 45 years of existence. What caught the eye was that how ordinary it looked, in that it hadn’t been restored and looked to be in everyday use.
With the clue in the name, Minis were always small, but what was even more noticeable amongst today’s traffic was it looked absolutely tiny.
It also had the ‘digital’ typeface style of original number plate that some cars had in the era from about 1977 - 1982? I’ve tried to Google the name of this font/style but can’t find it. Does anyone have more info on what this style was called?

Carty/Sam - weren't these particular plates known as "Serck" plates with that style font? V reg sounds about right for the era, I think they came in about T reg, possibly late '78.

Yes, I think they were. They seemed to be a fairly short lived fad of the late 70s/early 80s. My last Mark 5 Cortina, which was X regd, had one in the front when I got it, although the rear one was the normal font. As the front plate was a bit tatty looking, and TBH, I didn't like that style of plate much I replaced it.

Serck it is. www.volkszone.com/threads/serck-number-plates.691028/They were pressed aluminium plates, so a forerunner of the current fad for some people to fit their cars with the 4D plates. It’s unclear when they started and finished. My initial stab at 1977-85 may be a bit premature for their demise as some forums I’ve just read quickly has them possibly lasting later into the 1980s although their actual end date is unknown.

Out on my travels over the weekend I spotted a very tidy 1960 Vauxhall Velox. As I was driving Annie's car I didn't have a dashcam and was using my phone as a sat-nav so I couldn't get a smudge. I noted the number though and checked it out on the car tax check. This confirmed it to be a 2.6 litre first registered in September 1960.
I did note that the driver wasn't scared of putting his foot down either, on the country roads we were using he certainly wasn't hanging about.
Sam.
