I had another look at the article which is quite a good insight into TPTV and what it's about.
In an ideal world the likes of BBC Four would be more geared up for showing perhaps not all but some of what TPTV is showing along with maybe the BBC working more closely with the BFI? I don’t see no reason why BBC Four can’t broadcast some of these films and programmes during the daytime instead of it’s odd 7pm start time – even if it was for catch up of it’s documentary programmes alongside the films TPTV tend to show. To be fair BBC Four is generally a good channel and has shown a proportion of rare/classic BBC shows over the years. However this does seem to be drying up recently and it’s tending to repeat things like the same sort of programmes and/or films that have been shown a week or so earlier on BBC 1 or 2 or worse is showing things like currently Pride and Prejudice which I feel has been shown and flogged to death by the BBC and many other channels too… Surely there’s something else made by the BBC, something we haven’t seen on television for years – Shoot for the Sun, The Marksman, Looking After jojo, Law and Order, Scum, Edge of Darkness, The Crow Road, Boys from the Blackstuff, Gangsters etc. they could easily get shown in that slot instead! You could also argue ITV3 should really be doing the same and showing much more of the ITV etc. archive there. A few years ago perhaps it did but for me ITV3 tends to simply be Heartbeat/Foyles War/Poirot/Marple/Midsomer Murders/Morse etc. with the Coronation Street and Emmerdale omnibuses thrown in and not much else. It’s almost like in my post about Discovery etc. it’s the same programmes doing the rounds time and again to the point you don’t even need to own the DVD’s, record them you could say catch up on them literally a week or two after they’re shown. Again like what TPTV has been able to do why isn’t ITV using ITV3 to show rarer things like say Special Branch, Out, Fox, Armchair Theatre, Beiderbecke Trilogy, One Summer, Thief Takers, Widows/She’s Out, Tales Out of School (Made in Britain), Villains etc.? Would be nice for them to get out of their comfort zone! Don’t get me started on Drama apart from say Taggart, Rebus and a few other things it’s dire and shows the same on a loop stuff like ITV3 does.
The elephant in the room now is Britbox. From what I can see it’s output is mainly much of the stuff that has already gone out – pretty much to death, on the BBC, ITV, Drama etc. etc. Their advertising features many of the shows I’ve mentioned getting shown consistently on say ITV3 and Drama but they want you to pay to stream them. Also it's odds on none of the rarer stuff we mention will never be made available on Britbox and if older programmes - let's say, have some issues they'll be cut like they have been when repeated recently on the BBC, ITV and Freeview... Fawlty Towers and Fools and Horses have had edits done to them for these reasons on Britbox when regardless and if I am paying for them they should be left uncut!? Also that ‘no-add’s’ thing won’t last that long if the punters don’t roll up for Britbox – can see adds like they do on YouTube appearing there quite soon and I think the only real purpose for Britbox which I’ve said before is just for it to be a just a stealth means for the BBC, ITV, C4 etc. to sell their programmes and streaming to Netflix, Amazon etc. when it doesn’t meet revenue expectations/fail and gain additional revenues! You have to take your hat off to and give TPTV their due. They’ve been able to have some success with film and TV programmes that have been ignored by many of these mainstream and you’d like to think alternative outlets that the BBC/ITV certainly could put forward more than they currently have and do. I don’t like everything TPTV shows, in fact there’s a fair bit of it I wouldn’t dream of watching! but you do get the odd nugget here and there like say Out, Hell Drivers, Poor Cow, Widows, Spring and Port Wine, Special Branch, The Man Who Fell to Earth and even enjoyable oddities like Blonde Fist, Hazzell, Van der Valk etc. that could easily be forgotten in today’s multi-channel and sometimes junk TV world. Fair play to TPTV for being independent mavericks whi’ve had a few bows and arrows slung at them and have managed to carve a nice niche out where others could and should occupy similar territory.

There's just too many channels, when there were just 4 channels you had greater diversity. Now they're trying to cater to everyone & in doing so they keep showing things people are familiar with. That's ok for a casual viewer but no good for people with a deeper interest in tv & film who want to see more obscure stuff. This is partly a fault of people in general, they tend to stick to what they know rather than broadening their horizons, you go round in circles doing this & never learn anything new.
People seem reluctant to look to the past these days, the idea of watching something from 50 years ago is a turn off, they want to be part of what's current. The problem being that what's current is usually crap compared to the books, films, tv & music of the past. Even my parents in their 70's & 80's are on facebook & netflix, I buy them dvd's for Christmas of old films & tv & they don't watch them. My sister bought them an ipad a few years ago & they're never off it, they survived well enough without it just as we survived on 4 tv channels, clearly technology is massively influencing the content we consume & not in a good way.
I watch youtube far too much, you can spend hours on it watching rubbish. It's habit forming.

I think the current channel line up's are all trying to outdo each other with similar shows and/or showing the same shows on say ITV4 then Pick, Dave, Quest etc. Freeview particularly seems same old right now yes you've got realistically 30 odd channels but it's no good when 80% of them keep showing the same stuff for the last 2, 3, 5 years as they have been IMHO. Freeview that was available 10-15 years ago seened to have a lot more choice and better programmes too and I'm nor impressed with what SKY and Virgin Media offer either. Thankfully we have TPTV and as said I may not like much or a lot of what they show generally but you do get a good odd find here and there you don't get on other channels.

I agree, there is far too many channels about these days. Its reaching saturation point now I think. Everything I pay for , cable , Netflix and Amazon I rarely watch although other family members do. I only use approx 10 channels out of hundreds TPTV included. I will record stuff from them to watch as and when so really its like watching my own collection. I don't pay for movies or sport either as they are terrible value. Got rid of those nearly 20 years ago and never missed them. If I wanted to watch sport I'd go to the pub and an afternoon there is more fun and cheaper than a months subscription. I would say Youtube is fast becoming the channel i watch the most.

I noticed on my EPG that Budgie's coming on Talking Pictures next Tuesday (16/06/20) at 9pm.
Said it before but they're showing much better and varied classic ITV programmes than ITV3 these days and looking forward to seeing this after so long, whether I like it or not.
If TPTV could lay it's hands on Charles Endell Esquire which didn't (for some reason) get a DVD release would be even better!

Charles Endell was excellent. I actually thought it was better than Budgie Definitely want to track it down one way or another, shame STV didn't do the DVD release in 2016 they pulled it at the last minute for some reason? (cost?)
Looking forward to seeing Budgie again, if it's as good as I remember and as good as say Special Branch or LWT's Villains I'll get the DVD's for sure!
