Hard to watch Special Branch ( the George Sewell incarnation ) without thinking of it as a dry run for The Sweeney & let's be honest Sewell, a good supporting face, does not bear comparison with Thaw, nor does the chemistry between him & Pat Mower compare to Thaw/Waterman.
Having said that I've never bothered to watch 'Redcap' with John Thaw nor Morse/Kavanagh QC. I can't think of many series that you can happily watch over & over like The Sweeney. Off topic a little now but I agree with you Arthur. I like John Thaw but never really got in to Morse/Kavanagh QC, can’t put my finger on it but just doesn't pull me in like The Sweeney continues to do. Auf Wiedersehen Pet & Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads are two series that I can and do watch over and over and they still hold my attention. Now then,

Ah that's interesting, I know it was recently on Forces TV (edited) but will be interesting if TPTV show it uncut and the Thames/Euston Films series too which are quite different in look, feel and acting style.
Thanks again for the heads up Charles. I'd have thought it would be cut down - Special Branch was made to fit in a 1 hour slot, at 3 parts with 2 Ad breaks at around 4 minutes. The screen time of the episode will run to around 47-50minutes max, without any titles/credits/idents.
Also - it appears that some of the digital channels each have their own standards for what to edit out on terms of Taste. Some things considered "racy" may be edited out by one channel and not another.
ITV4 edited most of the Sweeney repeats and in a few cases, ruined the narrative. Had it been the first time I'd seen the episodes, I'd have been scratching my head at what was going on in a few of them.

Yep, I'd noticed the ITV4 edits as well. Given todays politics I'm surprised they don't edit them even more. Probably the same people who go round covering up some statues etc.

Looking back on the old VHS recordings I made - from UK Gold about 20 years ago - there was quite a bit edited out. Two of the worst edited episodes were "Abduction" and "Taste of Fear"

Talkingpicturestv have an onscreen written warning prior to many shows & films regarding content that may offend. I think they're the only channel that does this. There's a post about the circumstances surrounding this earlier in the thread ( starts on page 18 ).
A few years ago I worked out the running time of the UK Gold broadcasts of the sitcom 'Potter' compared to the Australian dvd release. In 6 episodes there was 30 minutes of material removed to fit the schedules.

That's about 5 minutes per episode. In film makers terms - that is five pages of script. Or - 1 days shooting. (As you need to get a minimum of 5mins Edited screen time done per day)
That's right Arthur - Talking Pictures is the only channel that shows a written warning on screen. Maybe they are of the attitude that a programme should be aired as it was made. It's content may be offensive now, but when the show was made - attitudes were different.
It reflects the time it was made.

For those of you who have never watched this classic 1970s series, it starts on TPTV on 8th November Vi Blimey Vi - I had forgotten about this one!
The last I saw of Hazell was a clip on "TV Heaven" on Channel 4 during the early 1990s.
Didn't know Terry Venables had a hand in on this. He (and his brother "Tiny" - AKA the Venables Brothers) were associates of Joe Sylvester and Kray 'henchman' Tony Lambrianou during the late 50s & early 60s. Yet another crossover of proper Villians and TV!
I'll be tuning in to this.

I got both series on dvd some years ago, I've watched all series 1 but only some of series 2, for some reason I lost interest. I keep meaning to watch the rest of it. It's well written, funny as well as violent in parts. Rather like Adam Faith as 'Budgie' Hazell can be difficult to like at times, I think that's why I didn't watch the whole of series 2, that & the fact that its shot on videotape ( with filmed exteriors ), so it can look cheap. I recall an episode with a laundrette studio set on a fake looking street.
I do like the show though, I bought the book on the making of Hazell series 1 years ago on ebay, it's by one of the authors of the Euston Films Ltd book & is a similar format.
