In fairness, aiming to represent all types of people ( something tv, particularly the BBC, has not always done ) is a difficult line to tread. If you make it a policy to include faces from as many walks of life as possible, you are guilty of 'tokenism' or being PC, but I'm sure we all remember a time when presenters, news readers, etc. were invariably White & middle class with received pronunciation accents. It's only in relatively recent years that we've had regional accents becoming more of a norm, whereas in the past it would be Northern 'characters', the Fred Dibnahs, Ted Moults & Brian Glovers.
You may remember Joey Deacon, an elderly man with cerebral palsy, who appeared on Blue Peter a few times. The mocking term 'joey', accompanied by a mimicking of a 'spastic' was a common sight in school playgrounds. Surely it was because people were unused to seeing people with physical handicaps on tv. If we don't see people represented positively on tv we are more likely to be suspicious of them, more likely to see them as 'alien'.
Having said that I understand the argument against PC box ticking, for instance my local library card features an image of a young muslim girl in a hijab reading a book. I can understand how many would see that as both tokenistic & not representative of Lancashire as they know it. Somehow we've got ourselves into a vicious circle where striving not to offend one group of people means we'll always offend another group of people as a result.

I agree Arthur.
Also - I think the vicious circle we are in can be attributed to the (not so) wonderful press. Certain newspapers went through phases of constantly running scaremongering stories about Mass Immigration; Britain being taken over; Terrorists are all coming into the country to claim our benefits, people coming in taking our social housing, school spaces, jobs, overwhelming the NHS and all that.
They seemed to forget, that all those people who came over en masse in the 50s & 60s - had it not been for those immigrants; a majority of of the public transport system would have been knackered (Buses / Rail)- as it was those immigrants who staffed them, and also took some jobs that we didn't want to do. So - many contributed a great deal in that respect.
As for LBGT / Disabled - with this, it's more I think that they felt that they weren't represented enough in programmes. Though attitudes of the 1960s, are totally different to those of the 2010s.
Back in the 60s - you could be arrested if you were Homosexual.
There was a case on the news yesterday about a Falklands Veteran who had his medals taken away from him by the MOD as he came out as Bi-Sexual.

Agree 100% about the role of the press in this and I have no time for racism at all. Similarly, I like the equality between men and women that we now have, women can do the same jobs as men and should have equal pay etc. I also agree that it is good that regional accents are represented on TV.
A fine line needs to be negotiated between pc box ticking and unrepresentative of groups, which I don't think they always get right. My problem with LGBT stuff is that I think it's being over represented and brought into inappropriate areas, such as kids TV, I am not suggesting that discrimination should return but, on the other hand, I think that the amount of coverage given should be toned down a bit.

I agree totally, LGBT needs to be represented equally. But TBH I don't think Childrens TV is the right place for it. They should just include LBGT people in programmes as they would with any hetrosexual; without making too much of a big fuss and a kind of "Look at what we're doing" approach.
Indeed, it needs to be toned down.
What beats me - is that groups make a big enough song and dance about not being represented enough.
No one (expect a humble few) made a huge song & dance about Abu Hamza, stood on a London street, preaching hate to one and all, and getting regular coverage on the national news. (Isn't that helping spread his cause?)

Don't know if this has been on here before, but I'll mention it anyway. I've just heard a guy on "Banged Up Abroad", an American use the word Bathroom at an airport when he should have said toilet or lavartory. I've heard this many times over the years of course but its really getting more annoying to me these days. I heard it in another annoying context yesterday.
What is it about yanks? They use all those 'F' words in their films and they call a toilet the bathroom ?
Charles.

Americanisation of the language annoys me too. A few others I can think of are "back to back" and instead of successive, the abomination that is train station It's a Railway Station, "torn down" instead of demolished.
Changing rack, The Sunday Times rich list. What is all this sycophantic rubbish about and what is the point of it anyway? I think it's vulgar and tacky, the worship of money. It serves to highlight the inequality we have, the gap between rich and poor in the country had been narrowing for a long time and by the end of the 70s it was at its narrowest. From the 80s onwards, it has been going in the opposite direction.

The Jeremy Kyle show, at last this utter trash has been axed. How anyone could watch this appalling spectacle is beyond me, people's lives being pulled apart for the entertainment of morons.

That 'individual' has engaged in the modern day forms of Victorian Freak Show/Bear Bating which gloats at this pantomime and offers more problems than solutions generally.
Never liked him, never watched him NEVER WILL WATCH HIM!
