Re Americanisation again, yesterday BBC News 24 had coverage of basketball player Kobe Bryant's death, even interviewing more than one person on the topic. How many Brits are familiar with Bryant? I only know his name from an Ali G sketch where he interviewed basketball players in the US. Would the main US news networks cover the death of a British footballer, cricketer or rugby player, tragic accident or not? Absolutely no.
Similarly I've noticed UK online news sites like the Mirror & the Daily Mail covering the deaths of US celebrities who are absolutely unknown in Britain like Rip Taylor. It's the equivalent of Sid Little's death making the New York Times.
I turned on Good Morning Britain for a few minutes when I got up, and it was a really big item on the show. I've honestly never heard of the bloke. The media seem obsessed with the States. I would like to see more European coverage myself.

However having looked him up I see he was accused of rape in 2003 and although the case was dropped Bryant said that although he thought it was consensual he now realises the girl didn't think that. Lovely, so basically rape.

Spot on, Arthur! I must confess I have never ever heard of this basketball star, but it seemed to be the main headline on several UK media outlets last night. US sports generally seem to have little appeal in most other countries so why the coverage? I believe that basketball is popular in Baltic states such as Lithuania, though. Terry Christian once referred to them as "Mickey Mouse" sports Vi

By coincidence I just got a change.org email asking to sign a petition to change the NBA logo ( a silhouette of basketball player ) to mark Bryant's passing.
I wouldn't mind if basketball was a popular sport over here or on tv but it isn't, if you asked the UK public to name even 1 current basketball player most wouldn't be able to.
I just counted 15 separate articles on Bryant's death on the mirroronline's front page.

Glad it wasn't just me Arthur. I'd never heard of this basketball player until today at all.

I hadn't even heard of Syd Little's passing. It must have happened while I was in the US over Christmas. Gene.

Why not just put SWR in Room 101 generally Sam, they've become an absolute nightmare and not just due to the recent guard dispute either - whether you agree or disagree with that.
They're so crap at the moment I avoid using them. Northern Rail or Arriva Northern as it now known had just had their Franchise stripped from them. So it looks like we will now have that under Government control - as well as the East Coast Mainline.

Glad it wasn't just me Arthur. I'd never heard of this basketball player until today at all. I'd never heard of him either but that doesn't mean a thing as I wouldn't be able to name any current footballers unless they've made the news by being arrested for drink-driving, picking up prozzies, raping and spit-roasting, or good old fashioned divorce and adultery. The real role models of the game! Mind you, from what I'm lead to believe most of the players in English football are not English anyway. Sam.
