Channel 5 was owned by a guy called Desmond (Richard Desmond?) I am not sure if he still owns Channel 5 now? He used to own the Daily Express and Star newspapers which I believe he has sold. He also owns porn TV channels so I suppose we couldn't exactly expect quality telly from him. Charles. Yes, that's right Charles. He also owned several top shelf magazines too. He turned the Express from a just about passable paper into a complete and utter joke. It's website is even worse, it's practically Sunday Sport stuff.

I know there's not a lot of football interest on here but I have to have a rant about what's happening to my team, Bury. They are a week away from expulsion from the league which they have been members of since 1894,due to financial issues. Basically they were taken over a few years ago by some dodgy property developer who came out with all sorts of crap about expansion and new stadiums but all he did was take loans out, secured against the club at high interest rates and left them hugely in debt He then sold the club for a nominal fee to some buffoon called Dale, who hasn't a clue what he's doing and the league have postponed the first four games as he can't, or won't, give them the financial confirmation that they need and there is a winding up date of next Friday.
He went on talk sport last week and had a row with one of the players, none of whom have been paid since February and denied that he's had an offer to sell. The feeling among the fans is that he's had a big offer for the land and wants the club to go.
Why are these people allowed to get involved in the game? I have been going to watch them, on and of, since 1973 and its disgusting. The football authorities need to get a grip.

Yeah ! I heard something about Bury FC. Cartman I haven't got a massive interest in football, but I do watch nearly all of Liverpool's games. From what you said about the situation with Bury it totally stinks. Thank you for explaining it all so well. I dont know why the football authorities can allow a situation like that to develop. Hasn't a similar thing happened with Man. U. and L.F.C to some degree.
I sincerely hope that Bury survives all this.
Charles.

I dont have any interest in football at all but from what you've said Carty, this is a right shambles. Quite how these "business men" are allowed to operate the way they do is beyond any reasoning. Ultimately, it's the life long fans such as yourself that are left feeling angry and let down.
I hope that something can be done to save Bury for the sake of genuine fans like yourself.
Gene.

Channel 5 was owned by a guy called Desmond (Richard Desmond?) ..... He also owns porn TV channels so I suppose we couldn't exactly expect quality telly from him. Charles. Bit of a paradox that one Charles Originally, Channel 5 was owned by a consortium, one of the "members" was Thames Television (post-franchise as they had huge ideas about going into production). As you'll remember, it was C5 who repeated "The Sweeney" series in 1997/8.
Incidentally - Ian Kennedy-Martin approached the 'new look' Thames with an idea of updating the series (off the back of the success of the repeats) - and the "Thames" response was this "We're in the business of producing new Television programmes - not giving the kiss of life to old ones"... They went on to produce tripe like "X Factor", "Pop Idiot" and all them...
IMO, C5 is a pile of crap - and given that it's owned by someone who owns Porn channels hardly suprises me.
Mind you - C5 seems to be just back to back "Can't Pay" programmes. (Where is the entertainment in seeing a single Mum and kids from their home....?).

It's very rare that I watch anything myself on the top five TV channels these days. I do occasionally watch a repeat on ITV3. during the day.
I noticed that ITV1 showed one of those crappy shows in which the Police stop people for speeding and stuff that was at 9pm in the evening on peak time TV during the week, and it was on for a full hour. I don't know if that's a new low, or maybe they've done it before.
As for weekend telly I wouldn't dream of watching ITV on a Saturday night. I'd sooner watch paint dry. I hate that X Factor type garbage. Funny how your opinions change, when I was a kid I didn't like opportunity Knocks much, now I think it's pure gold compared to Simon Cowell and his his phoney panel.

Thank God IKM's idea of a new Sweeney show never happened. C5 did resurrect 'Minder' but it had already lost its spark during the Ray Daley years.

Thank God IKM's idea of a new Sweeney show never happened. C5 did resurrect 'Minder' but it had already lost its spark during the Ray Daley years. TBH, I was quite alarmed when I heard that C5 was going to make a new "Minder". Though when it was shown, I was quite impressed (by C5 standards anyway) - it had turned out much better than what I had first imagined.
However - I agree Arthur, it had lost that 'spark' - perhaps the fact Euston Films were not making it contributed, who knows.
I am glad the idea of a new Sweeney series was turned down - I often wonder what it would have turned out like. I gather part of the story was that Regan was retired - under a cloud (possibly a nod towards the final episode Jack or Knave) and Carter had been promoted to a Commander..... I am not sure that this would have worked (we'll for me at least!)
Not sure who'd have played the lead roles. (This being before the Nick Love film being made of course)

An ‘90’s Sweeney could’ve have worked with perhaps Dennis Waterman in a senior officer role, an new squad with a similar Regan & Carter dynamic and maybe John Thaw as Regan in most episodes as a behind the scenes player who’d left the force in 1978 and was more of a freelance private eye etc. This might have been a bit too similar to ITV’s Thief Takers which was around a few years before and had Ted Childs on board for the earlier series and as said it most likely would’ve ended up a similar way to C5’s Minder re-make or most likely The New Professionals which originally had the idea of Lewis Collins in the ‘Cowley’ type role but failed to secure him, didn’t get picked up by ITV and ended up with (the exception of Edward Woodward) a cast of unknowns with no real chemistry and shown on Sky which thought it would be a good idea to chop 10 minutes out of each episode for extra adverts… Interesting that Ian Kennedy Martin did propose a Sweeney re-make to a post-ITV Thames and when John and Dennis had a reunion in the late 90’s they both seemed very positive about the original show and maybe the idea of ‘working together again’. I do know IKM gave his blessing to Nick Love to do The Sweeney film which perhaps should have been left alone or maybe been done as something new/else – different title, characters, setting etc. which might have worked better. Being honest I’ve not really seen it in over 6 years and don’t really have much of an inclination to do so any time soon. On the whole I feel re-makes whether set in the past or contemporary don’t really work for me. I’d much sooner see film/TV come up with new ideas for things which even if they show reverence to past shows like Sweeney, Minder, The Pro’s etc. are moving in a new and different direction and don’t sabotage the legacy many of the original shows had!
