It was on a week or two back on the Talking Pictures channel so I gave it a watch. It was passable I suppose, mainly of interest as a reminder of the era. Same here recorded it on the PVR a few weeks back but not got round to watching it. May try and do this in the next few days... just hope it's good even alright.

Same here, it was no great film, but worth watching for the era and to spot Sweeney faces The Saint

I watched this again the other night, the version I have still annoys me so I've ordered another copy supposedly the correct version from Network "original Theatrical Version" so hopefully it won't be cut.
Does anyone who's seen the film recognise the quarry location at the start ? Looks like London can be seen in the distance perhaps ?

It's been donkeys years since I saw this but from recollection, I seem to think it was Springwell Chalk Pit on Springwell Lane, Harefield.

Thanks Gene A Sweeney location "Pay Off" from 1976. I'm wondering now without drifting off topic too much If that was the Quarry used in The battle of Billys pond ? not a million miles from Shenley where some of it was filmed. It seemed like it could have been a Chalk Quarry or at least I always believed it was.

I sat and watched this again last night for the first time since its release 39 years ago. After this thread was first posted I've been looking at the schedules to see when it was on but finally gave up and bought the Blu-Ray. Not much in the way of extras on it aside from the alternative ending to placate the septics, the cinema trailer, and some stills but that was about it.
What can I say about the film?
Hard to describe but bear with me...
Sometimes you really appreciate a fine wine, in my case if I drink wine I like a good quality Pinot Noire. Yet there are also times when a cheap bottle of house plonk goes down well. You know the quality isn't the best but it has the desired effect and you ultimately really enjoy that departure. And so it goes with this film, it wasn't the best I've seen not by a long chalk (but equally it was a long way off of being the worst!) but I was sat glued to it from beginning to end and enjoyed that departure.
Certainly the bikes, especially the Silver Dream Racer, looked very dated now but the motocross section at the start bought back memories for me both with the bikes used and from actually doing motocross myself all those years ago.
What also kept my interest though was seeing Donnington, Brands Hatch, and Silverstone as they were with the advertising of the day such as Leyland and Austin-Rover as well as clever product placement by Heron-Suzuki.
It has to be said that there were some dire shots with David Essex and Beau Bridges "racing" in front of poorly edited backdrops but they bought a laugh rather than condemnation.
Time to invest in a hydraulic motorcycle workbench, I've got some bikes that need fettling...
Sam.

I've never seen Silver Dream Racer, or had any great desire to do so, but I do like David Essex, particularly some of his early songs e.g. Rock On, Streetfight, Stardust etc I'm more familiar with ' That'll Be The Day' & ' Stardust'
Now yer talking Arthur
Both those films are excellent. I have both on a Double BFI DVD. It's been a few years since I watched them so this thread may well prompt me to dust them off.
Great cast too - Essex, Ringo Starr, Robert Lindsay, Billy Fury, Marty Wilde, Adam Faith & Dave Edmunds
(See also Flame with Slade, but that's another post for another day)

I saw "That'll Be The Day" a couple of months ago but haven't seen "Stardust" in years. I think I'll have to buy both films for a catchup again.
While watching "That'll Be The Day" I did recognize a good number of locations were around Ryde and Sandown on the Isle Of Wight so once I can get some screen grabs I'll see about doing some Then & Now smudges on one of my visits.
