I've been watching some episode from The Avengers recently for the first time in many, years. I'm working my way through the second series made I believe in 1962, all made in black and white of course.
Honor Blackman was his co Star at that time, one of the very first woman to play an action type woman in a TV series. According to what she said in an interview I read recently, some or all of those early ones were shown live. It's hard to believe with all the action and stuff going on in the show. Thing is I'm a bit blown away by just how good Macnee is in the show. He has loads of long lines and doesn't seem to put a foot wrong in his performance. Some of the others fluff the occasional line but not Patrick.
I've really upped my opinion of him after watching the early ones. I'm loving them so far. I like the jazzy background Johny Dankworth music too.
Charles.

I think the very first series appeared in '61 CB. I've got the whole lot on DVD but haven't watched all of the earlier b&w stuff yet, I couldn't resist watching the Diana Rigg colour series first... Villain

I still love them though. It was terrific television. Don't forget when comparing the Honor Blackman series with the Diana Rigg ones, that there was a hell of a lot more money being spent on them by then, and they had better production values. As I said though, I've got a soft spot for the early video taped black and white series. I've seen some of the ones with Joanna Lumley. made in the mid seventies and I'm not as keen on those. Charles.

Sadly, as is often the case with many TV shows from this time, hardly any episodes from the first ABC Avengers series, which featured Ian Hendry, survive. Fortunately, Windy Miller, Del Boy and I saw the long-lost missing print of 'The Tunnel of Fear' in Birmingham at the Kaleidoscope event back in November, which was one of the highlights of the day.

Nice to watch the Avengers from time to time, as you say Charles, the later mid 60's eps got a bit more dafter in places but that could have been the 60's influence by then with the quirkiness, not unlike the spoof Bond film Casino Royale of about the same time.
They've also been showing them on Freeview during the week too.

Apparently the early Avengers were made at the ABC TV studios in Teddington Middlesex, which sadly seems to have been demolished for a housing project. They seem to to have used quite a lot of sets for a video taped show in the early sixties, which surprised me. I was watching one yesterday where Steed was posing as a steward on a cruise liner
There are a few very good websites dedicated to The Avengers, with an amazing amount of information about the show.
