Not a very constructive comment, but watching TOTP yesterday it struck me how crap Bananarama were. I notice that they're still performing as a 2 piece! Speaking of bad music, a pre fame Sinitta appears in Forrest's 'Rock The Boat' video. The best moments of the show were John Peel's dry putdowns, commenting on James Ingram & Patti Austin- "at no.18 that's 'Baby Come To Me', sheer poetry eh? Wish I'd thought of that".

Yes Bananarama were crap! They did one which was just about tolerable "Shy Boy"
Also, I always thought they looked a mess too, hair all over the place, shapeless outfits. Two of them turned up briefly on an episode of Benidorm a year or two back and I thought they looked massively better than they did in the 80s, although nobody looked nice at that period really!

I suppose if you were being kind you'd say that the dressing down, local disco handbag dancing & general lack of effort shown was deliberate, but then Stock Aitken & Waterman got hold of them, all that went out of the window & they became just another generic 'girl act'.

Don't get me started on Stock Aitken & Waterman!!! now they REALLY were crap! the only thing which rivalled them were Robson & Jerome, for which Cowell was responsible

It's all a matter of opinion of course, but personally I enjoyed Bananarama's appearance on TOTP last week - I found there (almost) co-ordinated outfits and their nearly choreographed but not quite dance moves quite refreshing from other acts who tried too hard and looked false. I've said before about them that it was great just to see three pretty young girls having fun dancing and enjoying their time on the telly - and I LOVED their wild hairstyles too ! The music was a bit iffy, and you are right their Stock Aitken Waterman era wasn't as good, but "Na Na Hey Hey" as a song has always held a special place in my heart as the crowd at my local football club used to sing it at every home match as "Na Na Na Na , Na Na Na Na, Hey-ay-ay ... Billericay!" or something liket that, in our 70s glory days, then with more gustoall over again when the song came back in the charts in 1983 - we were still singing it in the early 90s too !! Onto other acts featured last week and I thought OMD all looked smart in their various checked shirts, though I didn't temember the song at first, but they got me wondering just when it became fashionable to NOT tuck your shirts in ?! I remember always going clubbing the in the 90s with mine out every time, possibly late 80s too in the early house days, but in 1983 everyone wearing a shirt on TOTP has it tucked in ! Forrest was a bit cheesy to say the least, dreadful video, with or without Sinitta, but I used to play the 12" a lot in my early club gigs as it mixed beautifully out of Galaxy's "Dancing Tight" also from 83 on apair of shiny new Technics 1200s !! And as a soul boy what a joy it was to see James Ingram and Patti Austin singing their duet surperbly live, both thankfully still with us and still making music in the studio and on stage. Not much to say about the second epsisode - thankfully we got to see it with Tony Blacburn's issues with the BBC now resolved it seems - except I'd forgotten how Paul Weller learnt to have fun in videos with the Style Council aftre his "serious" Jam days ... Ultravox put out yet another pretentious "WTF was that all about?" video for their latest single and Bucks Fizz once again looked glamorous, taking their run of hits into a third year ... But Bonnie Tyler stole the show with her great rasping voice and stage presence in the studio at Number One - plus she nearly "popped out" of her jacket a couple of times ! Always capitvating viewing ...

Here's the rundown for this week.

Been keeping a watch on the last few weeks episodes... nothing really stand out but enjoyed Orange Juice's performance last week. Not really a fan as such of them but interesting in they used a Roland TB-303 for the bassline (as intended) on rip it up and the 303 is a instrument which although shunned in the early 80's it's unrealistic bass sound became very popular in the late 1980's when musical tastes changed.

Worst lyric of recent TOTP episodes goes to Duran Duran with- "Don't say you're easy on me, you're about as easy as a nuclear war"

As usual I am about a week behind watching the old TOTPs, but at least there was only one episode ! All back to normal in the background this time with plenty of OTT dancers including several pairs of predictable giant red boxing gloves on display for Joboxers dynamic performance - must look up and see whatever happened to those guys ... not much according to Wikipedia ! Nobody went on to do particularly great thing sin TV, Music or Films etc , oh well ... I believe this was a "live" episode which accounts for Nick Heyward having an "All About Eve" moment, totally missing his cue to start "singing" on Whistle Down The Wind, though he quickly caught up and carried on quite admirably ... not a lot else to get too excited about this week, just another decent enjoyable show from 83, must say I am enjoying seeing all the videos, many of which I don't recall, some good, some ...er...not ! And for me personally, it was a nice surprise to see David Joseph performing after the No:1 (with the crowd of course!) - his dance moves to "You Can't Hide" were almost as good as I remember mine being !

The live performance of Blue Monday by New Order was the standout for me for this week's double header. Hope we see Sid Snot getting an appearance
