My favourite Donna Summer record was "Winter Melody" from the very end of 1976. I thought that was a superb song and it never gets played on the radio now at all

Here we go then - 1983 ! The year I turned 21 in May and all sorts of new experiences in all walks of my life were coming my way - it was quite a year and already some clear memories have been stirred by this first episode !
Though it turned out as one of the 80s more memorable videos, "Down Under" by Men At Work was one of those where the "plan" was to act out each of the lines of the song literally ... just like the old TOTP dancers often found themselves doing ! Sharon Redd's fingernails stole the show visually, not her best song, she did quite a few top soul tracks over the years, and maybe she realized that to keep us interested by growing an extra six incheson each finger and reaching down into the dry ice a couple of times to pick up ... something ! Huh ?? Anorak Corner : two songs back to back ending in the word "avenue" by Eddy Grant & The Maisonettes ... just saying ! And we also saw possibly the only appearance by Drew Barrymore on TOTP in the clips of "ET" though if we stick with this for many more years we might see her in some video clips on the programme accompanying "Independent Women" by Destinys Child which was from "Charlie's Angels" in the year 2000 !!

Kid Jensen and John Peel worked well as a pair on this weeks show I thought. Peel had me chuckling with his dead pan banter throughout the show referring to "Kid" as the chirpy Canadian. Also ..." I'm the elder statesmen in this partnership. So I get to do the Top Ten" I remember this episode mainly because of the Men at work Video Keith Harris and Orville and Phil Collins. Watching these back after 34 years always throws up a song or two that makes you think oh I remember that. Even though its been 34 years since you last heard it. Incantation – “Cacharpaya (Andes Pumpsa Desi)” was exactly that I remember the Keith Harris and Orville performance and all the kids at school the next day were doing impressions of Orville. We love a bloody annoying novelty record in this country something that has been a regular on these repeats since 76. Nice Leather trousers Keith

Keith Harris lived in my town & used to own a little nightclub there called Club L'Orange or 'the duck club' as some locals called it. I saw him in the post office a couple of times & his wife who was a sort, a tall blonde wearing tight jeans, great scotches

Just about the only, annoying, comedy, novelty record I can tolerate listening to is Combine Harvester by the Wurzels. Possibly because I associate it with my favourite summer of all time, 76.
The worst - JOE DOLCE...AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!! every time that aural equivalent of diarrhoea came on the radio in early 81 I had to immediately switch off/change station and I have always managed to avoid hearing it ever since

No TOTP previews anymore? Watched the 3rd Feb 1983 episode last night and only two worth watching for me; Terry Hall (Fun Boy Three) returns to social commentary a la Too Much Too Young with Tunnel of Love and Indeep with Last Night a DJ Saved My Life. I don't normally like dance music but I have always liked that one. I skipped the rest. Highlight from the previous episode was The Beatles with Please Please Me. I bought that single (complete with red Parlophone label) back in 1983 and still have it. It think it was a 20 year anniversary re-release. it didn't chart very well & I remember at school being teased about it as I was very much into The Beatles but as the chart position shows (#29), at this time I'm not sure they were held in high esteem, certainly not like they are today. Honourable mention to Echo & The Bunnymen with The Cutter but note to Ian McCulloch, keep your shirt on mate. Anyone else still watching these? Personally, I thought that with a few exceptions, this era was pretty crap but it's still worth a look.

Here's this and next week's rundown: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08bqdzjwww.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08bqfctThink my main interest will be with Indeep, Tears for Fears and the Thompson Twins I also wonder if Depeche's performance is the promo video as AFAIK haven't really seen a TOTP for Get The Balance Right on YouTube etc. and are Central Line and China Crisis's performances repeats from the previous week on BBC Four? Central Line was kind of interesting like a slightly more synthpop/electro version of the post-disco soul around before the emergence of House in the mid 1980's.
