I see they are holding a Star Trek Convention at NEC in Birmingham this weekend. I can't say I've ever been big fan myself. I didn't mind the original TV series, but I've never watched any of the films. I loved the film Galaxy Quest though, which took the Micky out of Star Trek.

Not a fan of Star Trek either but George Takei was on the One Show a couple of days ago promoting it in case anyone wants to watch it on BBC iplayer. He and Shatner are odd characters, they have a long standing feud which must make their convention duties awkward but as can be seen here in the cost of having your picture taken with them ( £55 for photos with Shatner ), they must rake in the money at these gatherings. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/destination-star-trek-50th-anniversary-convention-tickets-19951243707

I once read that there were a few in the cast that didn't like Shatner for some reason, I think he commented on it in his books on the series. I love that bit in Ace Ventura Pet Detective when Jim Carry does an impersonation of Shatner in "The Twilight Zone." TV series.

Quite enjoyed Galaxy Quest myself too a great p*** take of ST and other similar sci-fi stuff. As for Star Trek itself it's not something I really like or hate generally enjoy watching the films if they're on TV but don't go out my way to watch them. Interestingly William Shatner narrates the US episodes of the new Clangers series rather than Michael Palin. £55 for a pic... hmm.

That's a bit steep. William Shatner is minted anyway. He was at the NEC today. I wonder how much dosh he made ?

Apparently Shatner's standard fee for an autograph is $75. Nice work if you can get it for actors these conventions- get on a plane, sit & sign autographs for a few hours, leave with a few thousand dollars, then off to another convention & do the same. I was reading about an Only Fools And Horses convention that's held each year, the bloke that runs it has basically turned people's affection for the show into a business. He has an arrangement with David Jason ( who doesn't attend the convention ) where he gets him to sign all manner of OFAH tat which he then flogs. He also tours shopping centres with members of the cast & a small set of the Trotter's front room, as well as a replica Reliant Robin, people pay to have their photo taken next to them. All a bit mercenary if you ask me.
There are actors & other artists who don't charge for autographs & instead people can make a donation.

I would never pay someone for an autograph, a donation to charity is fair enough though $75 for a Shatner autograph, what a waste of money! The Saint

There was a on scene report on Sky News about it earlier. They said it was the biggest science fiction franchise in the world. I wonder who owns the rights to it ? The must rake in some money.
