Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia - (2020) Well its been long overdue but I have bought an album by a contemporary artist for the first time in about 15 years. I haven't liked an album enough to warrant a purchase for many a year but I kept hearing the odd track from Future Nostalgia on the radio and quite liked it. If like me you like a good uptempo dance pop record then this album is the best thing of that genre that I've heard of years. Here's the official full album playlist Future Nostalgia full album playlist(official)On Steve Wrights Radio 2 show Don't Start Now often appeared amongst the classics. The track sounded interesting from the off and grew on me pretty quickly. I bought the album and wasn't disappointed. Don't Start Now's in your face prominent Bass line is something I approve of ,its a bit Jamiroquai and that's always a good thing. I find the hook from the track is the pre-chorus bridge that has just a small amount of piano and strings to tempt you then off it goes. That kind of thing reminds me of a Chic record, again no bad thing. Don't Start Now After getting the album (on coloured vinyl) it was pleasing to find more very good tracks on it. I have to say that Pretty Please is my favourite and the best on the album. Pretty Please opens with the vocal and an interesting little bass groove and finger snap. Dua's voice rides the groove perfectly and her smooth somewhat smokey delivery pulls you into the song. Like Don't Start Now there's a little break down before the chorus comes in which increases the impact of when it hits. The chorus sees a smooth beat complete the picture and your hooked! Smooth, groovy and very well produced. A cool track. Pretty Please The album artwork is 50s inspired and looks fantastic. The motor reminds me of D type Jaguar , nice. Maybe the retro inspired cover is a tie in to what the record sets out to achieve. Dua has stated that she wanted to make an album that can keep company with other big artists offerings. It drew influences from dance tracks made by Jamiroquai, Madonna ,Kylie, Gwen Stefani amongst others. I think they have certainly done justice to those influences and made a very good album that will be held in high regard for years to come. This girl has the potential to be a huge star like those mentioned before considering the quality she's producing on only her second album . Future Nostalgia ? You bet it is 9/10

Thanks for the heads up on the Dua Lipa material Del, kind of not really noticed her as she seems/seemed to be of or similar to the X Factor acts for me but I'm always open to decent stuff from anyone... I've had many a band come on my radar when they change style or embrace different sounds and the older stuff becomes as much appreciated too.
Certainly your comparisons like Jamiroquai, Gwen Stefani sound good too. I'll try and sound it out!
Thanks again Del!

I don't usually listen to the radio that plays contemporary stuff, stations like capital as I don't really like most of it. Sure there's the odd good single now and then but It all seems a bit auto tune heavy which makes vocals often sound weedy/feeble. Musically nothing stands out too much either. As a result of listening elsewhere you can miss some of the good stuff hidden amongst the average. This record is good quality and the more I listen to it the more the classic artist influences I detect. Smart idea to take your cues from those artists. The album needed a couple of listens to be pulled in but there's nice riffs all over it, I also like the lyrics and delivery throughout. As I said above if you like a bit of feel good music this is a good quality album that's worth listening to the whole lot of. How often could you say that these days? Pretty Please is a smooth groove turn the bass up, Dirt you won't be sorry

Yes, I don't dislike Dua Lipa. She has done some decent stuff, I liked the one she did with, I think, Calvin Harris, one kiss.

In stark contrast to you 21 century boys, here at Emsworth Castle it's... Prehistoric Sounds (1978)
The third album by The Saints The brass aligned to their sound works really well but I can see why it might have struggled to find an audience in 1978 It's great though
