A Hole In Babylon ( first broadcast 29 Nov 1979 )
This is a dramatisation of events leading up to the 'Spaghetti House Siege', the bungled robbery of an Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge by 3 armed Black Nationalists that began at approx. 1.30am on Sunday 28 Sep & ended on Friday 3 Oct 1975.
What is strange about this Play For Today is its uncanny similarity to the first Minder episode 'Gunfight At The OK Laundrette' shown 1 month earlier on 29 Oct 1979, including the appearance of Trevor Thomas as one of the robbers in both shows. You would swear that Leon Griffiths & director Peter Sasdy had seen 'A Hole In Babylon' and parodied it despite it appearing on tv 1 week after Minder.
The smudge below is of the real life captives returning to the storeroom in which they were held.
The man second left, Giovanni Scrano, can be seen in a video interview in the link below. Scrano became a regular prison visitor to one of the robbers, Franklin Davies, in 'A Hole In Babylon' as an immigrant from a poor Italian background he is seen to sympathise with the men's motives. In 'Gunfight At The OK Laundrette' Terry shares a similar moment with the Trevor Thomas character Stretch.

Oddly enough in 1982 an Italian comedy film based on the siege called 'Spaghetti House' was released featuring Rudolph Walker, best known from 'Love Thy Neighbour' as the leader of the trio of robbers. Also in the cast are Rita Tushingham & Derek Martin who can be seen at the end of this clip-

I wonder what Colin Welland made of it? That would depend on how much he was paid for the Rights for the US producer to make it!
