Dinner At The Sporting Club ( first shown 7th Nov 1978 )
After The Sweeney finished Dennis Waterman's next tv acting job was on Minder, as ex boxer turned 'minder' Terry McCann, however prior to Minder John Thaw's first tv role after Regan was in a play about a boxing manager written by Minder creator Leon Griffiths. Thaw stars as Dinny Mathews, a boxing manager who has to wrestle with his conscience after being offered a fight for his young & inexperienced 'prospect'. Scenes in the play were filmed in the Thomas A Becket gym/pub in The Old Kent Road which you will recognise from 'Regan'. Several familiar Sweeney faces include Patrick Durkin, John Bardon, Maureen Lipman, Eric Kent & Tony Caunter. In the screencap below you'll see in the distance Danny Knight, the man seen encouraging Carter ringside in 'Regan', Knight was a resident boxing trainer at the Thomas A Becket gym. Note the sign reading 'Pugilism Not Vandalism', this was also the title of the 3rd episode of the Euston serial 'Fox' which featured Ray Winstone as a boxer. In the second screencap is Liam Neeson in his second acting appearance, next to him is Terry Downes, former boxer & sometime actor. According to wikipedia he is Britain's oldest living former boxing World Champion. Coincidentally the young black boxer in the play, 'Elwyn' played by Herbert Norville, also appears in the Minder episode 'Rocky Eight An A Half' where Terry makes a boxing comeback. Available on dvd and youtube, it's an excellent piece of tv that is of interest to Sweeney & Minder fans.

I watched it again last night, really good, anyone who likes The Sweeney is guaranteed to enjoy it. I forgot to mention that Thaw's wife is played by Marjie Lawrence from 'The Placer'! Also making an appearance is Bernard Stone from 'Messenger Of The Gods'.

Capital punishment was suspended on a trial basis for 5 years in 1964, and was not actually abolished until 1969.

Just noticed your recommedation Arthur, and looking forward to watching it. I remember Terry Downes appearing on telly a lot when I was a kid. Nice to hear that he's still going. I'm also a Liam Neeson fan. It will be interesting seeing John Thaw too, just after he finished the Sweeney. Sounds good, thanks.
