The Olympics has been on the box a hell of a lot in our house, as the missus has really gotten into it this time. I don't mind at all as I watch my stuff after nine o' clock as a rule. Actually I've enjoyed it a bit myself, but as has been said, they seem to have too many sports that have their own tournaments. Charles. Nice one Mrs Bronson. I always enjoy watching all the sports too and even miss it when it's finished, though the Paralympics starts after the Olympics and this year it seems that the broadcast of events will be telecast just as much as the Olympics on Aust. tv. All the media tend to just focus on the country they are telecasting to so I don't know if many people heard about Aussie, David Bird-Smith. He got a bronze in the 20km walk. His coach is his Dad and Dad tried to get past the barricade to go hug his son at the end but was arrested by Rio police ! He got himself locked up, fined and not released until that night. His son's comment was "the old bugger got himself locked up for a bit and got himself a fine, but it's great isn't it !" I saw his Dad talked to by the press later and he wasn't fazed by it. I suppose it's a Rio story for the family !

One thing about these games that has been lacking for me whenever I've watched it is atmosphere. The thin crowds have been crap & the buzz you felt around the London Olympics just isn't there. Then it sank in after I heard one of the BBC presenters observe that the Brazilian mentality is such that they just aren't interested unless their country is participating and, of course, winning. Say what you like about the Brits, we get behind people whatever their nationality & we love an underdog, I think it's this attitude that makes all the difference.
As for the disgraceful behaviour of the Rio police that Batgirl mentions, in Latin America they have military police, very different from the police forces in Australia & Britain. I visited Mexico some years ago & was stopped, questioned & searched by them for no reason- they are not pleasant people.

I will say Congrats to Team GB for top results in these Games. The Aussie athletes have been getting into a bit of trouble. I wondered if it was even bothered to be reported in other countries as it was small news. Ten of them were arrested because they had altered their tickets so they could have better seats to watch the basketball between Australia and Serbia. Now apparently Aussie officials are saying changing accreditation on tickets for athletes in events is done without a problem in other countries but apparently you shouldn't try it in Rio ! They were detained for hours, had to face court and were fined. au.sports.yahoo.com/rio-2016/a/32393966/aussie-athletes-arrested-in-brazil-accused-of-tampering-with-accredation/#page1 I have enjoyed seeing Usain Bolt race. At work it has been telecast on a big screen outside so students/staff can watch the events live. Staff just nick out at the right times to see the big races. It was really watching some of the big event races with about 200 other people. There was a fun little news piece showing Bolt getting a selfie with Farrah (just while Farrah was waiting before his race !).

I suppose at least it shows that the Brazilians are as hardline on visiting Olympic athletes as they are on their own population. They really haven't done themselves any favours in terms of PR for Brazil or for future Olympic bids!

We haven't heard too much about the other nations athletes except for the USA swimmers who tried to pull a fast one Batgirl . I'm glad you're enjoying the games.
I don't think Brazil could afford to host the games again, nor do I think their population would back them after the furore it has caused there Arthur Pringle

Is it just me or was the closing ceremony very poor?

Is it just me or was the closing ceremony very poor? It wasn't just you. I thought that too. Generally the closing ceremony has less spectacular theatrical moments and is more of a concert but that one band played for an awfully long time while the athletes made their way into the arena. It is usually interesting to see what the next host country presents but I didn't understand any of Tokyo's presentation. Well I liked the start and the inclusion of the Pokemon but once the dancing with cubes started I was lost.

One thing the Rio closing ceremony didn't have that London did have was Russell Brand, so it wasn't all bad!
