If you had a choice from the years covered here which do you think was the best one overall for music?
For me I think I have to narrow it down to 1978. There were several influences happening at the time, producing an interesting and varied chart, with something for everyone. The early, basic punk had more or less died out by this time but bits of it still hung around, but it had largely developed into New wave, in parallel there was also the disco boom.
Some great songs which take me back to this year, when I started work, are
Because the Night, Patti Smith
Love is like Oxygen, Sweet
Everybody Dance, Chic
Rat Trap, Boomtown Rats
Radio Radio, Elvis Costello

Really difficult question to answer as very year has good and bad records.
For me, itβs 1976, for so many reasons β the long hot summer and James Hunt winning the F1 World Championship for starters.
Musically thereβs too much to list. There was something happening in every genre of pop music, and it was the year when punk emerged as something totally new. At the top of their game were :-
Elton John & Kiki Dee - Don't Go Breaking My Heart Abba - Dancing Queen Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody The Four Seasons - December '63 Wings - Let 'Em In Fox - S-S-S-Single Bed Bryan Ferry - Let's Stick Together The Bee Gees - You Should Be Dancing Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The UK Boston - More Than A Feeling Joan Armatrading - Love and Affection

Hard to pick really between '76, 77, 78 and 79. 1976 is probably my favourite ever year, the summer to end all summers and some great music too, but I think 78 possibly just edges it as there were two new influences at work. You named some great songs there too Windy.
A couple of others from 78 which invoke great memories are Run for Home, Lindisfarne, Davys on the road again, Manfred Mann and, of course, Youre the One that I want, John Travolta & Olivia Newton John, loved her in the tight shiny black trousers!!

Yeah difficult this one but for me has to be 1988 when the House/Dance scene came to prominence and created much of the music Iβve liked and enjoyed from β88 onwards. I know many of you on here wonβt be fans of them and I cringe at some of the poppier 'house' hits from '88 but hereβs a few of my favourite tracks from that period. Acid Trax β Phuture Strings of Life β Rhythim is Rhythim (Derrick May) Voodoo Ray β A Guy Called Gerald Stakker Humanoid β Humanoid Oochy Koochy β Baby Ford Box Energy β DJ Pierre No Way Back β Adonis Acid Thunder β Fast Eddie Washing Machine β Mr Fingers (Larry Heard) No UFOβs β Model 500 (Juan Atkins) Can You Party β Royal House (Todd Terry) Automatic β 808 State Wrote For Luck β Happy Mondays Open Our Eyes β Marshall Jefferson Presents Truth Fine Time β New Order Big Fun β Inner City Biting My Nails β Renegade Soundwave Beat Dis β Bomb The Bass The Theme from S-Express β S-Express Security β The Beat Club

Curious Dirty how one era can mean more to one person than another. I actually could not name any on your list! My interest in music gradually faded away from about 84 onwards and didn't start again until about the mid 90s so most songs between about 84 and 95 I cant identify apart from a few here and there

I should probably say 1974, the year 'Rising Damp' started. But I'm more of a sixties music fan, so I'd go for 1968. The Beatles released 'The White Album' and Small Faces' Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake came out too. So many great singles in the charts from this year: Fire Brigade - The Move Lazy Sunday - Small Faces Jumping Jack Flash - Rolling Stones Hey Jude - Beatles Jesamine - Casuals This Wheel's On Fire - Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity Pictures Of Matchstick Men - Status Quo Green Tambourine - Lemon Pipers Valleri - Monkees I Can't Let Maggie Go - Honeybus High In The Sky - Amen Corner Rainbow Valley - Love Affair Baby Come Back - Equals Mrs Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel Fire! - Crazy World of Arthur Brown Those Were The Days - Mary Hopkin And many more... I still can't decide. I can't pick a year that to me identifies the music I most like. So I'm going to pick 1984 because when I look at the music charts online this is the year that I probably remember singing all the songs out loud and knowing all the words which you do as a teen so they make a big impression on you. Songs and artists seemed to be (looking back now) a lot of artists with their first big hits who became really big stars including: Madonna - Like A Virgin Alison Moyet Prince - When Doves cry Pat Benatar - Love is a battlefield INXS - Original Sin Tears for Fears - Shout Cyndi Lauper - Girls just wanna have fun Wham Eurogliders (Aust. band) The Cars Van Halen - Jump ZZ Top - Legs Bruce Springsteen was 'the boss' and he really was ! Bruce Springsteen and a Thunderbird. It can't get better than that !
