There was also Presto and Wm. Low supermarkets – both gone.
You got Pink Stamps in Fine Fare, while other supermarkets tempted you with Green Shield stamps. The local Co-Operative Society used to have a Dividend Scheme, where you told the cashier your “Divi” number. I still remember my Mum’s number ‘7801’ The Co-Op phased that out replacing it with their own stamps scheme.

This subject has reminded me that we used to rent most of our tv sets & video recorders. Can't remember how much my mum & dad paid back in the 80's but the idea of renting a tv set in today's disposable age seems prehistoric.

Hmmm, must be my age but I remember all of those shops plus a few more besides. I wonder what happened to Wavy Line? And Annie often wanted to go in to Richard Shops while I perused my way around in Laskys. They've probably either gone bust or been bought out by others. Sam. They suffered when business hit a downward curve Sam. Never heard of Fine Fare but I assume thats because it was more northern based. Other fairly big companies had a massive presence up north were ASDA and Morrisons. ASDA only really expanded in the south during the 80's. Morrisons had no stores down here either until it took over Safeway which in turn had gobbled up Gateway and that leads us back to Fine Fare. I remember in the 70 and 80's if you wanted any sports equipment like trainers or footy kits you had to go to a tiny independent sports shop. It was murder getting hold of Adidas trainers and boots back then.

We had an Army and Navy stores here in Nottingham.I remember Fine Fare.I actually remember Gordon Jackson doing the ads,I would have been pretty young though.Gene is right about C & A still going strong abroad-I have just returned from a short European tour, and sat outside C & A in Helmond,Holland.Del Boy is right about sports gear being hard to come by,too-I remember only a select few places selling Adidas,Puma etc when I was younger. They also seemed to command very high prices.A couple of sports shops I remember very well here in Nottingham were Redmayne and Todd, and also M C Sports, probably both independent. We had an Olympus Sports too.Does anybody remember a shop chain called Liptons?Like a grocery store I think. And we had a huge Co-Op dept.store too,the kind that sold all kinds of stuff (not food). It was really big,in the city centre.I can also recall Tandy,Rumbelows,Reddifusion,Fords, loads if I really put my mind to it.Sad to think it's all gone.

The early to mid 80's was pretty much independents for trainers. From approx the mid 80's a branch of Burtons near me in Woolwich started selling Adidas, Puma, Nike and Reebok I remember the top price for trainers then was £40 to £45 which was a ransom for trainers then and would have been stuff like Gazelle's, Diadora Borg elite. Most kids had to get a top pair like this as a christmas or birthday present or make do with woolworths own brand Dunlop or Hi-Tec I remember the first decent Football boots i had were Adidas Littbarski. I got them for christmas and cherished them. I used to enjoy polishing them then and adding whales dubbing

Does anybody remember a shop chain called Liptons?Like a grocery store I think. Funny you should mention Liptons as over the last few days, prompted by the sad death of actor Mark Farmer, I've been watching 'Johnny Jarvis', the other main character in it is called Lipton, the school kids call him 'Sainsburys'. Liptons tea is the same family as the supermarket. VG was another chain of shops now gone. Re sports clothing, there was a shop near me in the 70s/80s called Boots And Racquets, that's where you'd go for tracksuits, football tops & boots, trainers, equipment, etc. Those were the good old days when people wore tracksuits to play sport in rather than as casual wear. As Del Boy says you would look after trainers & boots in those days. I was never a big football fan though I remember getting some Adidas boots & liking the smell of them & the fact that the studs came off ( previously I had an old pair with moulded studs ). It's all coming back to me now!

I vividly remember in MC Sports in the Broad Marsh centre here in Nottingham, they had on display a pair of Puma football boots,S P A King,£54.99.This would have been 1984-85 time I reckon, and that,to me,was an absolute fortune to comprehend.I used to hold this football boot in my hands, and literally start to sweat,it was worth that much money!!!
