There was a big Fine Fare near me in Blackpool, long since closed but a decorative wall frieze displaying the Fine Fare logo remained on the building for years, I think it still exists ( I try not to go near Blackpool if I can help it so I'm not sure ). Their own brand products were horribly packaged, yellow with a harsh black font, they looked like military rations. They became the equally downmarket Gateway in the late 80s. Coincidentally Gordon Jackson did tv ads for them!

I was just looking for that ad Arthur, I remember it well. I know they're still around but you don't see many John Menzies shops around anymore either. Most High Steets these days are coffee shops, poundland and charity shops.

I remember Fine Fare being a bit similar to the rather downmarket Kwik Save supermarkets which were common across North Wales and surrounding areas a few years ago. I think they also had a cheap line called No Frills, in which own brands were usually enclosed in a similar but very basic black and white packaging. Vi

Hanburys & Lennons were another two near me that were taken over, Safeways as well but they were common throughout the UK. Here's a list of defunct supermarkets!- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_supermarket_chains_in_the_United_KingdomVideo tape rental shops were the best, all the lurid covers of films you'd never seen or heard of because they were too exotic for tv completely captured my imagination. I remember being fascinated listening to kids at school describing Zombie Flesheaters or similar films they'd seen. The Radio Rentals shop rented a small selection of videos, mostly on the Warner label they would be displayed in the shop window, I remember the covers for 'The Elephant Man' & 'The Exorcist' had an effect on me as a 13 yr old.

C&A, which is on that list, was prominent in my home town in the 70's-80's. None around in the UK now, but happy to see them trading as usual on a recent trip to Belgium.

Hmmm, must be my age but I remember all of those shops plus a few more besides.
I wonder what happened to Wavy Line? And Annie often wanted to go in to Richard Shops while I perused my way around in Laskys.
They've probably either gone bust or been bought out by others.

I seem to remember buying a turntable from Laskys more years ago than I care to remember.
Tandy was another that has sadly disappeared. And Our Price.

My mum & dad used to go to Bejam every Friday night to stock up the freezer and does anyone else remember Olympus Sports?
