I think Bernard might have been taking the pee here, it's hard to tell, though surprisingly he did once say that his favourite comic was Larry Grayson. Apparently Manning began as an inoffensive joke teller until he saw there was audience for the offensive material, I think the same is true of Roy Chubby Brown. As The Saint said Jenni Barnett was a looker in those days as was Anne Diamond, I saw her on a celebrity edition of Max Bygraves era Family Fortunes recently & she looked Anna Raeburn was a tidy boiler in those days too

Roy Chubby Brown is a talented musician. He played in local bands on the club circuit etc. But whereas the music could fall on the deaf ears of an indifferent audience, the jokes told in between (esp. if blue) could go down a storm. Hence his career path.
