I've been to the London IWM a few times over the years. Is it still in Lambeth in the former Bedlam Asylum? That was a traditional building originally, unless it's been altered

Quite interesting reading about the Manchester IWM & how the interior is designed to disorientate the visitor. No doubt you'd have to visit it to appreciate whether it 'worked' or not.

It is still in the former Bethlem Royal Hospital building Charles. I've bee a couple of times over the years and it is well worth a visit. Gene.

Yes, it's still the same traditional building. It's confusing because there are 5 different locations known collectively under the brand 'Imperial War Museums'- Imperial War Museum London, HMS Belfast, Churchill War Rooms ( all in London ), Imperial War Museum Duxford ( Cambridgeshire ) & Imperial War Museum North ( Manchester ).

Interesting that Guardian article Art. Pretty much they're saying everyone outside the Giggs/Neville consortium and Manchester City Council are dead set against it but... as I've said before seems a done deal as with most of these things one way or another. Also I'm not against that type of redevelopment in Manchester but reckon it would work much, much better in a different part of the city centre. Not quite a done deal DE www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/15/gary-neville-pulls-plan-for-twin-manchester-towers-after-backlashGary Neville has admitted his £200m plans for two bronze skyscrapers in Manchester city centre have “failed miserably” in the wake of huge opposition from heritage groups. On Wednesday Neville said he had asked Manchester city council not to consider the application in its current form and that it would undergo further refinements. The 700,000 sq ft scheme, fronted by Neville and his former Manchester United teammate Ryan Giggs, was branded a “planning disaster of a magnitude not seen in decades” by heritage bodies last month. So the Sir Ralph Abercromby is saved for the time being.

Thanks for the update Windy interesting they've admitted it's being a bit of a 'failure' to win support both of the public and those in the building/architecture industry. I'm not against this type of development in Manchester/Salford and other Northern cities for that matter but I do think there are better locations for it than where the Ralph Abercromby is.

The proposed structures look so out of place, invasive & ugly it's hard to believe that they ever thought they'd be acceptable in that location, just as the Sir Ralph Abercromby would look alien in Dubai. Before you 'aspire to be global' you need to consider the interests of the people of the city itself, globalism may be something that interests an ex footballer with aspirations to be a successful developer but it means little to a Manchester resident.

Great bit of news. Personally I would rather the whole thing was scrapped, as I think these awful glass boxes are actually worse than the concrete stuff from the 60s, but this is a good compromise

Yeah like you Cartman would prefer that area of Manchester to be left alone but glad the Abercromby seems safe and it's more in keeping with what is there at the moment. Wonder if the awful events at Grenfell Tower etc. may put a block on some of these super high rise developments in Manchester and other cities outside London too? Hope to have a jar in there sometime when I'm next in Manc too.
