Saw this on BBC/Sky News this morning about Led Zeppelin. They may be facing legal action over Stairway to Heaven from a trustee of Rand Wolfe the guitarist in the 1960's band Spirit who once played on the same bill as Zeppelin in the 1960's and is claimed had his riff's ripped off by them and should get a writing credit on Stairway. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36022876Seems like six of one and half a dozen of the other but the two tracks are very similar and kind of makes Zeppelin a little hypocritical the stances they took towards artists who sampled them who they've taken legal action against and forced to remove samples or even whole songs. In particular the removal of the Schoolly D record Signifying Rapper from not only the album Smoke, Some, Kill but also Abel Ferrara's film Bad Lieutenant too for sampling Kashmir...

Led Zepplin have previous form with this. Their song "Whole Lotta Love" was deemed to be too similar to the Small Faces song "You Need Loving". Zep have also been in trouble over the song "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". The two songs certainly do sound very similar. Who'd have thought, Led Zepplin.... the world's best cover band

Apart from being massively popular, a key driver of demand is that each song when it is played live is not aiming to replicate the album track. Rather it was seen as an artistic opportunity for all 4 group members to bring their own interpretation each time they played. A personal favourite of mine is Rock n Roll which they used to end most gigs with. Excellent footage of their Celebration Day gig on youtube too. Cheers, Stan

As Windy says LZ certainly copied the Small Faces 'You Need Loving', Plant & Page were fans of the band & according to Steve Marriott could be seen at SF's gigs. You only need to hear Marriott sing 'woman' in 'You Need Loving' to know where Plant got it from. Of course the song 'You Need Loving' is based on a blues song as so many of the 60's bands songs are, so it wasn't original to start with but I read that Marriott would hear 'Whole Lotta Love' on the radio & say 'that's my song!'. Bands should just come clean & say 'yeah, we half inched it' when it's obvious they did. LZ toured with Spirit so it's a million that they heard 'Taurus' & copied it. Lots of bands do this & it's rarely coincidental. If you consider that there are countless ways to arrange notes, statistically the chances of a band 'coincidentally' coming up with more or less the same melody as a band they toured with is beyond remote.
'Stairway To Heaven' is their signature song, there's no way they're going to admit that they 'borrowed' the iconic acoustic guitar intro from a band that is not particularly well known.

These copyright claims dog the business all the time, it's an absolute nightmare to sort this kind of thing out. There is always going to be those who plaguerise others work, but equally you will have people who seek to profit from spurious claims.
There have been some big cases over the years of this type of claim. Two that spring to mind are The Verve - The Stones For bitter sweet symphony and Men at Work for Land Down Under.

I knew about the Stones-Verve claim case, what was 'Land Down Under' supposed to be ripping off?Wasn't aware of that case.

Who cares they/The Verve both made bloody good songs.

The flute section of Down Under was said to be based on a 1932 composition by Marion Sinclair called Kookaburra (A childrens song). As Sinclair died in 1988, copyright passed to publishers Larrikin Music. In 2010, it was ruled that Down Under has reproduced a substantial part of Kookaburra and granted Larrikin 5% of royalties from the song from 2002 onwards.

I was watching a youtube vid of the Cream song 'Tales Of Brave Ulysses' a few years ago & someone pointed out the similarity to Harry South's theme to The Sweeney. Also The Kinks 'Sunny Afternoon' has similar opening chords.
