I'm surprised One Of Your Own didn't get more support. I find that a good episode.

Yeah, I'm surprised too that Bait came in at no.2. A pity Tony Hoare didn't write more Sweeney episodes, the 3 he did- One Of Your Own, The Bigger They Are & In From The Cold are all top quality. As much as I like Trevor Preston, I think Hoare was probably the better writer of the two.

Back in the days when I got my Sweeney fix from Ch5 and Granada Plus I always used to tune in and more often than not The Bigger They Are was on. It used to drive me nuts at how they they would show the episodes in a bizarre order. Series four episodes would be followed by a series 1 etc. It wasn't until i got the Network box sets on release that i saw them in order and got to see some episodes I had never seen on the repeats. Big Spender and Victims were two I remember were new to me. There were others at least 1 per series.

I used to watch it on UK Gold in the afternoons & remember seeing 'Messenger Of The Gods' on ITV in the 90s or maybe earlier, it wasn't until I got the Network set that I started to get into it. Like Minder it's a show that's been endlessly played on sat & digital channels but it's not until you sit down and watch them properly that you begin to appreciate them. Talking about them on the forums with likeminded people has made all the difference to my enjoyment as well.

I'm surprised One Of Your Own didn't get more support. I find that a good episode. Yeah I quite like that one too Del. Michael Elphick was perfect as Jimmy Fleet and as for Patsy Keaney (Nick Stringer) and his band of mates... scary mate! Some good posts too Del/Arthur about the distinctions between writers like Trevor Preston and Tony Hoare. They both had similar upbringings but the difference is Preston was more self educated and left-wing political which made him look at things more from a wider working-class viewpoint. Tony Hoare however was on the fringes of London's villains and was a convicted criminal himself so could relate and write scripts which looked at things from the villains point of view... although Preston did eclipse Hoare with Out which looked at things from this perspective. Kind of ironic too the chinmey house where Fleet/George got tortured in is now part of Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherds Bush too.

I for one love Bait and think it deserves to be right up there at the top. I also agree that One Of Your Own is a great episode. Certainly, in my eyes, far better than Trust Red. But then it is all subjective isnt it.
Gene.

Speaking of bait, she's a tidy bit of tackle.

Ahh, the lovely Sheridan Fitzgerald.
Sadly, she was only 47 when she passed away in 1998.
