Throughout the 2 series there are what I consider to be a few nods to The Sweeney. An internal investigation DCI who comes to A Division is named Frank Morgan. The same Frank Morgan is also the surgeon who operates on Sam to being him out of his coma in the present day. Now, there are a few allusions to the film The Wizard Of Oz in Life On Mars, and the man who played both the Wizard & Professor Marvel in the Wizard Of Oz was called Frank Morgan.
However, my theory is that it is in fact a nod to the one and only Frank Haskins, who's real name was Garfield Morgan.
In Series 1, episode 7, one character is arrested on drugs related charges. The characters name is Billy Kemble. Another nod to The Sweeney ? I think so. Remember Sweeney episode "Ringer" ? Two of the villains in this episode were called Billy Martin & Frank Kemble.
There are more.... Anyone else spotted any ?

I had spotted the Frank Morgan one, but will now have to re-watch and look out for others.

I watched the final episode of Life On Mars a few nights ago. I absolutely loved the ending. I'll be watching the two series all over again pretty soon now, and I'll probably spot some things I missed first time round. The acting from John Simm and Phillip Glenister was brilliant. Certainly one of the best series on British telly ever.

The voiceover for the animation for the Camberwick Green style opening was recorded by an employee of the animation company just as an example for the Life On Mars producers so that they could write and produce their own voiceover. However, the Life On Mars producers thought that the original recording was good enough to retain and broadcast.

I was reminded of The Sweeney when Gene Hunt said: "Why do I always attract the liars and the weirdos?" It just seemed like a link to Regan's Abduction line, "It's a bloody holiday camp for thieves and weirdos." (I suppose it's a bit of a stretch but you don't get a lot of people saying 'weirdos' on tv anymore. Shame that really). Damn just realised that Gene Hunt says this line in A2A not LOM as he says it to Alex.

Hard to believe it was ten years ago but it is! I can remember watching that first episode and texting my mate afterwards saying ''we've got to buy some ace old British motors''. Within a month I'd bought my first Rover P6 and I was hooked on the series all the way through. The Sweeney influence / homage was apparent right from the off, I think Kudos Productions got the tone and feel of the show bang on. Villain

Did you know....
The Railway Arms room studio set was also used for Sam's flat in Life On Mars. During filming, one set would have to be completely dismantled in order to set up the other.

That was bloody inconvenient at times too!
Just when I thought I'd get back to my room for a kip after a stakeout with the Guv, I'd open the door and there was Nelson, Ray, Chris, and Phyllis staring at me!
At other times it was welcome though...
