It has been 10 years now since Series 1 of Life On Mars aired on TV.
John Simm was not the first choice to play Sam Tyler. Apparently, Neil Morrissey was mooted. Thank god good sense prevailed and John Simm was chosen.

Ten years!
Doesn't seem like it, where has that time gone? It still seems like 1973 to me.
I liked Neil Morrissey in Men Behaving Badly. It was so much better after he took over from Harry Enfield but he is still a comedic character that I think would not have suited the Sam Tyler role.
It could have been a much different story had Neil got the role and it raises the question on whether it would have been as successful? Would series two have been written? Would we have been treated to Ashes To Ashes?
So many 'ifs' but we can be grateful that through John Simm being a straight actor it was played to perfection.
Sam.

I actually thought it was before that. I would have guessed 2003 2004. It certainly has flown by.

Also, the BBC were concerned about it having a scifi title and wanted it to be called "Nick Of Time"
Just doesn't hit the spot does it ?

Interesting. It describes the series in an more obvious way but Life On Mars is a better choice ...cue Bowie. Don't think there's a song called nick Of Time.

During editing of the opening episode, the line "I'm 'avin 'oops was almost cut as the producer thought it was "too comedic"
Glad it survived the final edit.
Worse still, The Gene Hunt & Sam Tyler characters were not the original choices. They were originally Gene Burrows & Sam Williams.
Glad they changed those too !

I've been watching, and enjoying this fantastic series for the first time this past week, Ten years after it was made. ( I know, pathetic of me isn't it ? )
Only one episode of the first series to watch now, then onto series two, and then Ashes To Ashes.
John Simm, and Phillip Glenister both give really top performances of course.
It was a good idea to set it in Manchester rather than London.
As to the time factor it's really scary how fast it goes.
