I recently bought the Life On Mars box sets and have just finished watching series 1 & 2. Most of it was new to me, as I had only ever seen a couple of episodes. I thought the series was absolutely fantastic, when it was first on TV my original attitude was that it was just cashing in on 1970s nostalgia and making a Sweeney rip-off, but I now realise that was not the case and that it stands up as a first class TV series in its own right. I recommend the buying box sets, if you enjoy retro TV and films then you will enjoy Life On Mars. The Saint

Ashamed to admit it, but I never caught Life On Mars when it was first shown. Anyway, a family member has lent me the first and second series, so I will be watching it for the first time, very soon.

The Saint Nice one Saint As you say there's a lot more to it than just a Sweeney rip off too and working around Manchester/Bolton/Stockport in my time I was very familiar with its locations too ;)

Totally different show to The Sweeney and should NOT be compared to it. There are a few nods to The Sweeney in Life On Mars. I'll leave it to you all to spot them yourselves when you watch the show.
One clue is to listen to character names...
Gene.

You can't go wrong with it Charles, I was sceptical before it began but by the time I got to episode three I was hooked.

I absolutley love life on Mars, I never really botherd watching it the first time around, but bought on blu ray earlier on in the year, and have watched it quite a few times, it helps me top up mi accent, so I don't lose it lol..I think John Simms was brilliant at acting in the series and loved the way his character and Gene hunt bounced off each other! Maybe it could of gone on a little longer, but a guess 16 episodes made it unique and exciting as ya never knew where it was going till the very end! One of my fav bits that Cracks me up is the episode where Gene gets stitched up, and he as a mad' squirky solicitor who gets him off the hook' and he's in the office with Gene and loses the plot a bit for a moment whilst he starts talking, that scene is so funny, what made the writers think of that lol ? The sound track is really good and of course I love the ongoing want' of romance between Sam and Annie, and at the end, where finally after much anticipation they end up with each other.

That was a good snog we had at the end there.

I thoroughly recommend everyone to get both Life On Mars & Ashes To Ashes. The Guv's right. It shouldn't be compared to other shows like the Sweeney.
