Top Of The Pops tonight, 28/01/2016, is from 12/02/81. The show is presented by the effervescent Richard Skinner and features :- (28) Pretenders – “Message Of Love” (2) Ultravox – “Vienna” (31) Barbara Jones – “Just When I Needed You Most” (39) Coast To Coast – “(Do) The Hucklebuck” (32) Gillan – “Mutually Assured Destruction” (50) George Benson – “What’s On Your Mind” (34) Freeez – “Southern Freeez” (17) Slade – “We’ll Bring The House Down” (53) Beggar & Co – “(Somebody) Help Me Out” (54) Kelly Marie – “Hot Love” (1) John Lennon – “Woman” Not often do we get a show featuring so many acts from outside the top 30 - the Ultravox video and Slade's appearance have been shown before. In a bid to push extra sales and get to No. 1, Midge and the boys rushed over to Vienna to film a promo video for, err, “Vienna”. Unfortunately, the buildings they wanted to film were undergoing winter maintenance and were covered in scaffolding and tarpaulin. So it was back to London on the next flight and a night filming around Covent Garden completed the Austrian look that they wanted. Barbara Jones, Just When I Needed You Most, is a reggae cover version of an original from Randy Vanwarmer. I don’t know much about Randy Vanwarmer – maybe Del Boy has one fitted in his Reliant. If you’ve not seen the programme, Kelly Marie’s “Hot Love” is not a cover of the T-Rex hit. It’s an unfortunate inclusion in the show, with backing dancers who look like they specialise in Scottish Country Dancing, especially doing the Gay Gordons. The song features bagpipes – surely there are rules in music that have to be obeyed and never play disco tunes on bagpipes is the first rule. Freeez “Southern Freeez” was my favourite, followed closely by Beggar & Co.

The DLT hosted show from 19/02/1981 is quietly skipped over, which is a shame because there were some interesting performances on that show that we don't get to see - more on that later .... Tonight, 29 January 2016, we get the 26/02/1981 edition of Top Of The Pops, with Peter Powell presenting :- (19) Status Quo – “Something ‘Bout You Baby I Like” (6) Roxy Music – “Jealous Guy” (22) Beggar & Co – “(Somebody) Help Me Out” (43) Kim Wilde – “Kids In America” (25) The Passions – “I’m In Love With A German Film Star” (7) Madness – “The Return Of The Los Palmas 7” (31) Kelly Marie – “Hot Love” (8) Coast To Coast – “(Do) The Hucklebuck” (2) Ultravox – “Vienna” (9) Freeez – “Southern Freeez” (40) Kiki Dee – “Star” (1) Joe Dolce Music Theatre – “Shaddap You Face” The problem with showing TOTPs on consecutive nights is evident with this show. The DLT hosted show was skipped over which means this edition had 5 acts that were included in the previous Thursday night show. Not in the Thursday show, but with a stage performance that is just as repetitive as the chords they play on their guitars were Status Quo – a band that are starting to look like their name - here enjoying chart success with the Tom Jones cover “Something 'Bout You Baby I Like” Kiki Dee performed alone on stage with her name up in lights. She was the first British white female artist to sign to Motown in the USA, but success never came until her duet with Elton John and the Rocket record label. Did anybody spot the stage technician sticking his head out of the set to check the smoke was blowing in the right direction? – kinda spoiled the isolated performance. I think it’s the pouty Kim Wilde with “Kids In America” who stole the show for me.

I think it’s the pouty Kim Wilde with “Kids In America” who stole the show for me I won't go back over the previous couple of shows as the thread will end up getting messy. I must admit I find it strange that they are hammering out the repeats 2 per week especially as there will be gaps later on due to certain presenters. As you say Windy it seems as though the show was on a two week roster of acts with 5 previously seen acts. TOTP 26 Feb 1981Watching this episode of TOTP from Feb 1981 transfers me right back. This amazes me. I remember watching and loving the Kids In America performance. I still think that record sounds great now. Kim looks very moody, but i think she was just a youngster feeling nervous here at the start of her career. *The Roxy music performance brought back memories. My dad (being a huge Beatles Fan) got the right hump that Roxy Music had covered a John Lennon song so soon after his death. His opinion was that they were out of order for cashing in on the Lennons death. This is the first time i've seen it since then and I think they done a great job on it. At the time Roxy made it clear it was a tribute to John, although i do wonder about the timing of its release as there was so much Lennon in the chart at the time. Good spot on the Kiki Dee track Windy .I'll go back and have a look at that Here's how I saw the show :
(19) Status Quo – “Something ‘Bout You Baby I Like”This is very bland from the Quo. I liked them years ago and still love a few tracks but my opinion of the band nowadays is that they were extremely overrated.(6) Roxy Music – “Jealous Guy”See above *(22) Beggar & Co – “(Somebody) Help Me Out”Good sounding track this. I dont remember it from the time.
(43) Kim Wilde – “Kids In America” Like Windy I make this the best performance on this edition. Great debut from Kim with this very modern sounding pop song.
(25) The Passions – “I’m In Love With A German Film Star”Not for me this one. (7) Madness – “The Return Of The Los Palmas 7”Strange how they released this as a single but I think it sold well off the back of the great success they enjoyed during 1980. 1980 for Madness turned out to be their peak.(31) Kelly Marie – “Hot Love” Oh my god !! This is absolute Shite !!!!!!! :w***er:
(8) Coast To Coast – “(Do) The Hucklebuck”More 50's sound! and this one's a right turd 1981 must be the peak for this long running 50's phenomenon surely (2) Ultravox – “Vienna” Great record. Still love it as much now as I did then. Does anyone think that part of the beat sounds like a lorry throwing on its air brake ? (9) Freeez – “Southern Freeez”Again like Beggar & Co I dont remember this one. Its not bad though.(40) Kiki Dee – “Star”Only remember this from a TV program that adopted it as its theme tune. The chorus grates a bit by the end. (1) Joe Dolce Music Theatre – “Shaddap You Face”This was massive at my school at the time and most kids were saying " Ah Shaddup you Face" at every opportunity It's a funny little ditty that's got a great singalong vibe to it, but its crazy how it shot to number one outselling the finest contemporary song on the manor!! Hearing Shaddap You Face now really rams home how bloody awful it is.

Personally I prefer the air brakes, have you got an extended mix of that?
