Oh yeah! In certain scene's Mr Vance had his arms over bits of the 'Rock' bit of that jumper suggesting something else! LOL! That Cannon & Ball would be making a guest appearance ?

Interesting, to me anyway, that we are now moving into the Ashes To Ashes era. The Passions - I'm In Love With A German Film Star featured in the very first episode, and is a track I've always liked.
I'm with Tiger as far as Joe Dolce is concerned. Absolute rubbish.
Standout tracks from this weeks show for me are The Passions with IILWAGFS & Rainbow with I Surrender. I don't mind John Lennon's offering in either, but the real guilty pleasure is Cliff's A little In Love.

I'm enjoying this year of TOTP's more than usual so far, I think it's because the songs take me back to when I was 10 & first started being aware of pop music. I even sang along to 'A Little In Love' haven't heard it for years but the melody and words came back instantly. The big house in Cliff's vid reminded me of Thornley Manor

Looking at the tv schedule, it looks like we will get another "double bubble" TOTP week The first presented by Tommy Vance and the second is presented by Simon Bates. The first show broadcast on Thursday the 21 of January is TOTP from 29th January 1981Tommy Vance presents :
58. Slade – We’ll Bring The House Down 2 . John Lennon – Woman 44. The Stranglers – Thrown Away 18. Madness – The Return Of The Los Palmas 7 46. Sheila Hylton – The Bed’s Too Big Without You 6. Ultravox – Vienna 26. The Gap Band – Burn Rubber On Me 25. Diana Ross – It’s My Turn (Danced to by Legs&Co ) 3. Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight 29. Susan Fassbender – Twilight Cafe 1. John Lennon – Imagine 19. Heatwave – Gangsters Of The GrooveSlade’s performance was a blast from the past. They looked very out of place amongst all the 80's acts. Sheila Hylton, does have a thing about beds. Having previously covered Dusty Springfield’s “Breakfast in Bed”, a song about a woman giving another woman's man breakfast in bed.... and she’s not talking about eggs on toast !!! …. she’s now all alone in her bed and finding it too big. I’m sure a temporary situation. Needing no introduction from “Rock On” Tommy Vance, are Ultravox. Ultra means “beyond all reasonable expectation”, and Vox means “voice”. Some say the song “Vienna” is just pretentious. Well, if it is, then it’s probably the best pretentious record ever. No explanation needed for Legs & Co.’s routine to Diana Ross’s ballad “It’s My Turn”, where each of the girls come to the front and take their turn to dance. Here’s a photo a photo of Patti about to take her turn :- Phil Collins had a prop on stage with him, sitting on top of an amplifier. A can of paint and a brush symbolically placed in defiance to his former wife who had run off with a painter and decorator. There’s a number of hidden messages in the lyrics to “In The Air Tonight”, about lingering tension caused by the divorce. These negative feelings were "In The Air" and affecting not just the couple getting divorced, but the entire family. It’s Lennon final week at No. 1 with “Imagine”. The video has Yoko slowly opening the shutters in a big white room. Now Yoko, would it not have been sensible to sort the room out and open the shutters before hand? After all, you knew they were going to do the video in that room. No wonder people are so hostile to you when you’re so disorganised. But of course it’s not like that at all. The slow opening of the shutters in the “Imagine” video symbolises the gradual learning of what life is about, with the room representing the mind. Bit by bit the room gets lighter the more you open it up to the outside world……

Great review as always Windy. Is that bit about Imagine genuine or your own interpretation, interesting either way. I have to agree with Arthur too about not hearing a song for decades but then immediately knowing the lyrics; it was the Susan Fassbender track for me. strange when you consider that I often walk into a room and forget what I'm there for

Had to press 'mute' halfway through Joe Dolce, this horribly irritating dreck has sold Worldwide 6 million copies! Aww Arthur. It's-a not so bad. Hey! I think as far as novelty records go, this one's ok. It has a nice sing along feel to it, and if you don't know the words you can always just do the "Hey!" bit. Also appreciated Joe Dolce did a live performance on TOTPs. I'm with Simon Bates, and I think it may be a hit

Top Of The Pops, BBC Four tonight, 22/01/2016 is from 05/02/1981, and introduced by Simon Bates. On the show are :- (35) Stray Cats – “Rock This Town” (5) Blondie – “Rapture” (17) Spandau Ballet – “The Freeze” (19) Fred Wedlock – “The Oldest Swinger In Town” (12) Rainbow – “I Surrender” (11) Dire Straits – “Romeo & Juliet” (28) XTC – “Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me)” (15) Cliff Richard – “A Little In Love” (34) The Passions – “I’m In Love With A German Film Star” (30) Joe Dolce Music Theatre – “Shaddap You Face” (1) John Lennon – “Woman” (1) (video/credits) Spandau Ballet, Dire Straits and XTC are repeat performances. John Lennon retains No. 1 but with a different song The German Film Star referred to in the song by The Passions – “I’m In Love With A German Film Star”, is not Klaus Kinski, Rutger Hauer or any other leading German actor of the early 1980s. It was instead the very British Stephen 'Roadent' Conolly, one time roadie for The Clash. He was however, for a time in the late 1970s a TV actor on German television, notably playing the Joker in the 1979 mini series Das Ding (The Heist). This show didn’t quite match the quality of the 21/01/1981 edition. However, the variety of genres and styles represented means there’s something for everyone here. John Lennon takes a unique accolade for replacing his No.1 record, “Imagine” with one of his own records, “Woman”. Something that Lennon had previously achieved when a member of the group The Beatles where “She Loves You” was knocked off the top spot by “I Want To Hold Your Hand” in December 1963. “Woman” is a song written in appreciation of 50% of the world’s population and it’s taken from the “Double Fantasy” album. It’s also John’s personal apology to Yoko for the “Lost Weekend”. The Lost Weekend actually lasted 18 months during which time John had an affair with the couple’s assistant May Pang – something Yoko had suggested to John in an attempt to save their troubled marriage. The award for worst mime of the show is easily won by XTC, “Sgt. Rock” being an actual character in a comic Making a live performance was Joe Dolce Music Theatre with “Shaddap You Face”. Avoiding a situation like Louis van Gaal, (Manager of Manchester United), was met with on his return to the dressing room on Saturday, Joe had taken precautions. In case he may be booed off stage after inflicting such a dreadful song upon the TOTPs audience, he’d recorded the sound of crowds cheering, which he played back on a portable tape player at the end of the performance. Joe Dolce has to be congratulated for one thing. Something both Robin Nash and Michael Hurl have failed on – audience participation. And that’s the last time we see Blondie in 1981. Next appearance on TOTPs is May 1982 with “Island Of Lost Souls”, Lost Souls an unintended paradox of how this once wonderful band will look in the accompanying video.

Watched the second ep a bit groggy on Friday/Saturday. A bit of a mixed bag, similar to the 1980 ep's and I suppose for me it was split as follows: The GoodXTC, The Passions, Blondie and John Lennon (although seen the Blondie/Lennon promos many times). The BadStray Cats, Rainbow and Cliff. Can't stand 50's rock-a-billy and as for Rainbow/Cliff nuff said! The S***eJoe Dolce and Fred Wedlock. FFS shame I wasn't watching PVR would FFWD instantly! :w***er: The IndifferentSpandau Ballet and Dire Straits.
