Interesting how certain music can place you into a certain time zone.
1981 was the sound of Ghost Town by The Specials, Being With You by Smokey Robinson and One Day In Your Life.
More specifically the summer and first lads holiday...... to Pontins Prestatyn!
Only 8 years earlier Holiday on the Buses had been filmed there.

One hit wonders The Look's frontman is a deadringer for a certain cretin it was my misfortune to once know, wonder if you can guess who? Anyway, I don't think I've heard this song since the 80's & what struck me was how similar it sounds to Elton John's 'I'm Still Standing'. Bad Manners 'Lorraine' was my favourite, superb ska number with a great bassline. No Racey, Adam And The Ants or XTC on this showing, 'Sgt Rock' was the first 7" I owned, I think my brother bought it for me as I liked it. BIB
Bad Manners had a blow up doll thing on stage with them. Thank god Dave Lee Travis wasn't presenting

This Thursday, 14 January, it all kicks off again at 7.30pm with the repeat showing of Top Of The Pops from 8 January 1981, hosted by Richard Skinner. Pop news items and awkward guest interviews have been dropped, which means we get a healthy 12 acts appearing on the bill :- (29) Racey – Runaround Sue (4) Adam & The Ants – “Antmusic” (30) The Look – I Am The Beat (21) Barry Manilow – Lonely Together (20) The Beat – Too Nice To Talk To (59) Sad Café – I’m In Love Again (18) Matchbox – Over The Rainbow/You Belong To Me (11) Chas & Dave – Rabbit (15) The Specials – Do Nothing (24) The Nolans – Who’s Gonna Rock You? (33) Bad Manners – Lorraine (1) John Lennon – Imagine (10) Queen – Flash The Look have to be a strong contender for biggest One Hit Wonder from 1981. Safe to say this is not the best Top Of The Pops that there’s been. Novelty 50’s Rock n Roll, The Nolans and repeat showings of Adam & The Ants, The Beat, and The Specials all adding to the despair. John Lennon’s Imagine video, filmed at Lennon’s splendid mansion house home, Tittenhust Park, Ascot, in 1971 as part of a documentary covering Lennon's album of the same name is something we’ve seen many times before. So not much new stuff then ? Well, there was The Look with “I Am The Beat” – surely the one hit wonder of the year, and Bad Manners performed “Lorraine” with Buster Bloodvessel dressed as a 16th Century King of England who had an obsession with marriage. Still nothing exciting Windy ? What about Legs & Co. ? Umm, no. They performed a routine to a new song by Barry Manilow called “Lonely Together”. It’s a slow sad number and the dance very accurately matched the mood of the song. It became an unintended metaphor for the entire show. Richard Skinner at one point says “There certainly is some variety in the charts at the moment”, which, as we know, is code for “The charts at the moment are a load of crap”, so what did you expect ? Thankfully, the pop hits hangover doesn’t last too long into the new year, and the 1981 groove soon gets going.

Thankfully, the pop hits hangover doesn’t last too long into the new year, and the 1981 groove soon gets going. Spot on with this review Windy. It really was a staid old show this week. Fancy giving Legs a dodgy Barry Manilow number . What a total waste of their talent Interesting to see that 50's music is still featuring heavily in the charts after how many years now ? 4 . The Matchbox single Over The Rainbow is simply just bloody awful but as we know there is better of this genre round the corner, with more Stray Cats and Shaky's big year. And while we're bemoaning the awful The Nolans don't disappoint do they. The Nolans to me aren't great singers (half of them looking like they cant be arsed) they dont look fantastic either and the dancing is s*** too You probably can't blame them for the pants songs as they most likely didn't write them but , you can see why they currently own the title of S***est Group. The Nolans have seamlessly slotted into the role picking up where previous incumbents Brotherhood Of Man and the Dooley's left off. Whos Gonna Rock You ... erm none of you lot love A word about the Sad Cafe single- I’m In Love Again that was yet to grace the Top 40 ... CRAP What the hell were those boots that Paul Young was wearing. Reckon he nicked them off his Mrs In this show the repeats of Adam and the Ants and The Beat were the best alongside, Chas & Dave – Rabbit The Specials – Do Nothing, Bad Manners – Lorraine, John Lennon – Imagine and Queen – Flash were the only stuff worth watching.

Great reviews Windy & Del. That rap by Debbie Harry is a bit strange? Aliens eating cars? Can't see that having inspired NWA Are they broadcasting two episodes per week now?

I am completely stunned. It really beggars belief what folk will spend their hard earned cash on The same could be said for Mac Davis, “It’s Hard To Be Humble”. However, I do do know who bought stuff like this – my Dad did!!!! What an embarrassment This show’s most notable for the first airing of Ultravox – the nation’s favourite No. 2. Who’d have thought a record about Rigsby’s cat would do so well? The show opened with Susan Fassbender, “Twighlight Café”. “Twilight Café” was to be her only hit single. 1981 was very much the year of the one hit wonder. Susan Fassbender tragically committed suicide in 1991, aged 32 - so sad. Straps & Co., as DLT calls them , dance to the Stevie Wonder song “I Ain’t Gonna Stand For It”. Patti certainly doesn’t, spending most of the time writhing around on her back – and nobody’s gonna complain about that ...... I’m not a Phil Collins or Dire Straight fan so I skipped over their songs. John Lennon still at No. 1 with Imagine, which made me think about the time John invited Ringo over to his house to hear his new composition …..
