Blondie - Atomic
cover here
At number 5 is Blondie - Atomic This single makes our number 5 with 12 votes (UKC-1 for 2 weeks) (WOC-9) Atomic charted on the 23rd of February 1980 where it peaked at number 1. This song is from the album Eat To The Beat.
The Saint writes : Atomic was featured on the album "Eat to the Beat", Blondie's fourth studio album. The song was produced as a mixture of new wave, rock and disco which had proven to be so successful in their No.1 hit from earlier in 1979, "Heart of Glass".
Atomic was composed by Jimmy Destri and Debbie Harry, who (in the book "1000 UK #1 Hits" by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh) stated "He was trying to do something like "Heart of Glass", and then somehow or another we gave it the spaghetti western treatment.
Released as a single in February 1980, Atomic became Blondie's third number one in the UK, where it held the top spot for two weeks.

3 The Jam - Going Underground
cover here
At number 3 is The Jam - Going Underground
This single makes our number 3 with 12 votes (UKC-1 for 3 weeks) Going Underground charted on 22nd March 1980 and it peaked at number 1,
Staying there for three weeks. This song was a Double A side single release with Dreams Of Children.
Del Boy writes : The Jam's career had been gathering pace over the previous two years with successful albums All Mod Cons and 1979's Setting Sons. Going Underground was not only The Jam's first number 1 it went straight in at number 1 ! At the time of singles shifting the highest volumes in chart history, going straight in at No.1 certainly is a marked achievement.
It is often reported myth that the records success might not have happened due to an error at a french record pressing plant. Legend has it that Going Underground was an intended as a B side to Dreams Of Children !! I believe it was always meant to be a Double A release. This myth was probably invented to fuel interest in and promote the single. There is no such thing as bad publicity as they say. This to me is obviously a Double A because both songs are way too strong for either to be a "B" side. Going Underground was given all the attention by radio stations at the time which fuelled its three week stay at the top.
One things for sure The Jam had reached the Top of their game and this release was the first of three tracks over the next couple of years that went straight in at number 1 and cemented their place at the top table. C'est magnifique.

17 Average White Band - Lets Go Round Again
The upbeat “Let’s Go Round Again”, is a song about the hope of reigniting the flame to a relationship that had previously burnt out. But beyond the story of the lyrics, there’s a deeper, meaning: the song is really about the impossibility of recapturing the lost past. Always nice to watch the Legs & Co routine, where the colour of the costumes match the band’s name. Sue and Gillian wear exceptionally brief bikinis for this, and the other four are just as scantily dressed. Unsurprisingly, it’s the most watched Legs & Co routine on Youtube.

Its a fantastic record. Its got Groove this one and i always thought it was by a soul band until i found out its by AWB. Legs&Co are great here aren't they Four years into their stint on the show and they are producing great work with several notable performances this year. I remember the discussion we had on the sister thread TOTP 1980 about this "Lets Go Round Again" performance.

Green onions is without doubt one of the finest instrumental pieces ever to grace the charts. The track has a prominent groovy bassline and beat to which Booker T adds an amazing Hammond M3 organ line. The bands guitarist Steve Cropper uses his Fender Telecaster to great effect cutting in and laying down his solo.
Turn the bass up on your system and play this track loud! You won't be sorry.

I agree with you Del, think “Green Onions” is possibly the best instrumental single to ever be released. Unbelievably it was recorded with the intention of being a B side. According to Q magazine, a few years after this was released, Georgie Fame met Booker T and told him that he thought the Hammond sound on this song was amazing and asked him what the levers on the organ were set to. Apparently Booker T had been unaware that the settings could be changed and he replied, "What, those things move?" Also thanks for posting the Legs & Co “Green Onions” routine, which is one of their best in 1980. The 60’s look is expertly captured with the Mary Quant style black and white mini dresses that the girls wear. In fact, if this had been filmed in black and white and the viewer wasn't aware who the girls were, one could have been mistaken for thinking this was filmed back then. Pauline's solo and front of stage dance with the Brucie pose is a highlight of this dance.
