It was 35 years ago today that John Lennon was murdered by Mark Chapman.
R.I.P John.

I still remember that day clearly, I was 11 at the time. It was actually the 9th in the UK which was in keeping with John's superstition about that number.
Greatly missed, it's interesting to think what his legacy would have been had he survived but by the same token, I wonder if we'd have had the anthology, Free as a Bird & Real Love etc.
RIP John.

I can remember walking into our local newsagents in the early hours seeing the piles of papers waiting to be bagged up and taken out by the paper round boys, they all had variations of the headline 'John Lennon Shot Dead'. I couldn't believe what I saw, I was fifteen at the time and absolutely loved The Beatles. Difficult to say for certain how things would be if he were still with us, when the 'Double Fantasy' LP came out some said that he'd lost his edge. Who knows what direction he'd have taken if he'd carried on writing and recording. One thing's for certain - he packed a lot into his forty years.... so many Beatles classics and favourites which were predominantly or fully John's work... Strawberry Fields Forever (my favourite Fabs track of all), In My life, I Am The Walrus, Tomorrow Never Knows, Rain, She Said She Said, Norwegian Wood, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, and A Day In The Life, which started out as one of John's pieces. Villain What an incredible talent and gift John Lennon had. His contribution to popular music is second to no one, and he left us with a tremendous legacy. So shocking and cruel that his life was taken away in such a horrific and violent manner. RIP John

I remember the "NewsFlash" about it and my dad being totally gutted about it. John had plenty more to offer even though he achieved so much . RIP John
Best tribute i ever saw was at a bootleg Beatles gig in early December 1998. After the normal show and encore the guy who played John Lennon "Neil Harrison" donned a white suit and played Imagine on a white grand piano as per the video for the song. It was absolutely brilliant.

Although I was never a great fan of John Lennon's solo material I have always had a real appreciation of his work during his time with The Fab Four and there's no way I could even begin to describe the impact and the legacy he has had on the music industry and so many people's lives.
I'm certain that there was so much more to come from him and he would have continued to evolve with his music just as his writing partner has over the years.
Such a shame that it had to end in such a cruel and senseless manner.
R.I.P. John.

RIP John - just got back Tuesday night from Liverpool where in the Beatles Experience museum they've reconstructed the room where the "Imagine" Video was filmed - very effective!
Quite a character was John but a deep thinker I think and a musical genius.
I remember the announcement of his shooting as a 9 year old, I only knew about The Beatles as an old pop group before my time who were lads that wore suits. That morning I was having my breakfast before school. And my dad was just about to go off to work, but just before he left he said "Oh I heard something on the news (radio back then) about one of The Beatles - John Lennon - he's been shot and killed in America"
After that tragic news, it was majorly on the news for weeks afterwards and in an odd way I got to learn more about The Beatles after that (with all the tributes etc) and found their story fascinating since although I'm more of a casual listener than a collector of their records.

I'm going against the grain here, but I think John Lennons solo stuff wasn't all that brilliant. Mediocre at best. If he hadn't stood in the way of a bullet he wouldn't have become the 'icon' that he has. I'm not knocking the bloke personally. The Beatles did some OK stuff too. Bit overrated at times, but not bad. I do wish Macca would turn it in though. He should've done 30 years ago. The man simply can't sing. He's an embarrassment but gets away with it because "he's a Beatle". Like I said, Lennons solo stuff - meh.
