Sometimes when you hear a certain song you are immediately reminded of the time when the song came out and you first heard it ans it seems to immediately send you back to where you were then in your mind. Some songs are in my mind very strongly associated with a definite time and place and can bring back some great memories.
the song does not necessarily have to have been a massive hit or not even all that good always, in fact, a slightly less well known one gets less AirPlay and can be more evocative of the era when it was released. Here are a few of mine:
Jigsaw Sky high, Bowie Space Oddity, Greg Lke, I believe in Father Christmas immediately make me think of the winter of 1975
moving forward to 1976, the Eagles, take it to the limit, Cliff Richard Devil,Woman, Abbas Fernando, and I'm back in the spring, and onto that amazing summer, Peter Frampton, show me the way to go, from Frampton comes alive, Queens you're my best friend, and 100ton and a feather it only takes a minute immediately spring to mind,
jumping forward a bit to 1978 and the boomtown rats rat trap together with summer night city by Abba remind me of the latter months of 1978 when the weather started to turn cold, and into 79, squeeze up the junction and the beach boys lady Lynda were the sounds I remember from the summer.
there are many more I could bore you with, anyone else got any? Doesn't have to be the 70s, just that the second half of that decade was my all time favourite era

First record I ever remember hearing was Poco Haram "Whiter Shade Of Pale". It was summer and I was in Bamff, Scotland, and the year was 1968. it was played continuously at a boating lake close to the beach. Every time I hear it, it take me back to there. I was just 4 years old.

For me, it's anything generally that was in the charts in 1979-80. Hits at the time from Abba, Blondie, The Boomtown Rats, The Police etc. take me back to the days of the school disco, which were a regular feature at the junior school I went to. Happy Days Vienna

Certain periods in life seem to stand out more than others I find and, yes, Vienna, I greatly enjoyed 1979/80. Other songs which immediately take me back to the turn of the year, ie late 79 early 80 are Spacer by Sheila b devotion, the pretenders brass in pocket, the nolans, I'm in the mood for dancing (I said they didn't have to be good necessarily!!) living by numbers new music and one of my all time favourite songs, echo beach by Martha and the muffins.
Happy days for me too, I was 20 in January 1980 and remember listening to a lot of these while I was driving around in my first car, an Austin A40.

Takes me back to December 79, first time I heard it, FA cup 2nd round replay, Bury away at Rochdale and it came on the Tannoy at half time. Bitterly cold Tuesday night it was. I have to own up to quite liking it........guilty pleasure Another song I've just thought of also I associate strongly with that period Is My simple heart by the three degrees.

I tend to get mixed up with which year a song was released, but a few songs which really take me back to my school days.....Down To Earth,Curiosity Killed The Cat (think this may have been 1987/88 time),Love Changes Everything-Climie Fisher (1988?)Building A Bridge To Your Heart-Wax (1987/88).Honourable mentions also go to Taja Sevelle-Love Is Contagious,Mica Paris-My One Temptation, and the absolutely bloody dreadful EMF-Unbelievable.It certainly was unbelievable that it was ever a hit.Utter crap. The rest of the songs I've mentioned are all personal guilty pleasures of mine, and always bring back memories-some great, some awkward, some embarrassing-I was only 13 or 14.

For some reason it's the song that are terrible that stick in your mind. For example, I remember The Firm and "Star Trecking", and being in a London Pub in Walthamstow, Christmas 1987. I know - bad combination.

I remember as a 15 year old being in Debenhams in Staines with a mate of mine when "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac was played in the record department. It was the first time I'd heard it so I asked what it was, who it was by, and bought it there and then.
Whenever I heard it I was taken straight back to that day in 1977.
Sadly now it has a different meaning as it was played at a friend's funeral earlier this year. A good friend that died too young, at only 51, from cancer. It started to play on the car radio once since then. I couldn't listen, had to turn it off.
Strange how music can affect the emotions too.
Getting more upbeat again though:
On the way to the church the day I got married, it was a brilliant summer's day and we had the radio on in the car. Turn It On Again by Genesis came on the radio and we just listened to it all the way through. Now whenever I hear that tune it takes me back to the day, my last moments as a single man, and recalling what a great day it was.

This is a special song for me, it was 1981 & my pub The Barley Mow had it's very first jukebox fitted, this song was a firm favourite, unlike the terrible Black Lace version that came later.
