Thought I'd post a heads up about this new Krays film in which Tom Hardy plays both Ronnie and Reggie, here's the official trailer.... looks good... I understand there is another Krays film / or possibly a TV production being made, no other details htough I'm afraid. The 1990 film 'The Krays' is still very watchable, I dug out the dvd the other week and enjoyed it again. Villain

Looking forward to seeing this & have been since I first heard about it months ago. I made the mistake of reading the reviews today. I wish I hadn't. I should've waited to make my own mind up. As you said, the 1990 one is still watchable, if not very accurate.

I liked the 1990 film too. An interesting story as the Krays got away with what they did for as long as they did because the establishment protected them. They brought two MPs into their orbit, Tom Driberg who was Labour and Robert Boothby who was a Tory. Despite their politics, the two were good friends, probably because they were both complete perverts!
The Sunday Mirror started probing the twins and their connections, and it was in the interests of both political parties to avoid publicity on the issue so the activities of the twins were covered up at a high level. The paper was sued and the police instructed to back off.

I'm looking forward to seeing this film myself. I hear Tom Hardy gives a cracking performance, and the trailer was okay. My daughter her boyfriend went to see it last night and said it was good, but that the Krays mother Violet, or brother Charlie didn't appear, as they did in the Kemp brother's version. I wasn't too impressed with the ninties effort at all myself though, for one thing it didn't look like they'd spent much making it. By the way, I don't want to introduce any controversy, but does anyone else share my view that they kept Reggie in prison a bit too long ?

Heard somewhere that without Rons influence he may have eventually become a sort of legit businessman

It's recently come to light that the Kray's biographer John Pearson believes that the Krays, to put it delicately, had an incestuous relationship. From the reviews I've read the film is more about their relationship as brothers with their criminal activity being more in the background. Hardy certainly looks the part more than the Kemps did.
Reg Kray was certainly being made an example of re his prison sentence, but I've no sympathy for organised criminals as the protection & extortion rackets they were engaged in surely must've caused a lot of misery for everyday people trying to make an honest living.

I'll certainly be taking Annie along to see this; Tom Hardy certainly looks better suited to the roles than the Kemps were.
I did see the Kemps' version back in the 90s but haven't bothered to see it again. I think it was one of those that I thought was okay but not a must-see for the repeat viewing.
As Tiger says: I've also got no time for this type of organised criminal so whatever length their stay behind bars may have been, it is a just sentence that could never repay the hurt and damage that they inflicted on others.
Sam.

When Reg Kray died, I noticed the broadsheets avoided an obituary.
I don't like this kind of organised crime either. Although they 'helped old ladies across the road', I don't think they had much time for ordinary people, who would be disposable.
I don't think everything that they did will ever be known. More bits and pieces keep coming out over the years.

I've never seen the Kemps version yet anyway, but one review of Legend I read this week made out the 1990 film was pretty dire compared to this latest one and gives it a superb review. I must say, Tom Hardy looks very convincing as the 2 Krays, with the voice aswell.
I never condoned what these 2 violent characters did, despite also being quite fascinated by the Krays story, although I understand that Francis Shea's real life relatives didn't watch the film to the end, being disappointed by the way their relative was portrayed as a little cockney scrubber when they believed she was way above that. It was sad what happened to her in the end, and rumours flew around that Reg never consummated the marriage etc.
I also feel for the victims of those they walked all over, and R & R got what they deserved, perhaps even got away with it too easily with just imprisonment. Indeed had they committed any murders prior to 1965 (I think that's when the death penalty was abolished) and evidence and witnesses permitting, they would have likely hanged. Conveniently, the murders they committed were after those dates.
Somehow I'm interested in seeing it, but I hope it shows viewers that crime doesn't pay - Chris Ecclestone is always worth a watch in most things he's in too.

Anybody noticed that when Tom Hardy speaks as Ronnie,he sounds like Dave Brooker?
The twins were bullies, pure and simple.Ronnie was paranoid schizophrenic,it affected him in a big way-his speech, his movements.By all accounts he had a jerky, zombie like walk, almost as though his limbs were un-co-ordinated.Listen to any Kray interview and Reggies' voice also sounded quite flat and monotonal,it seems Hardy portrays him as a bit of a charmer in the film.I have read that Reggie had absolutely no sense of humour, and was also pretty tight fisted. What is also pretty interesting is the information that Freddie Foreman gives (now THERE is a real gangster). He says that if the twins did not get locked up when they did,it was only a matter of time until they got 'whacked' themselves. They were becoming a real pain, commiting horrible GBH and murder left, right and centre.Ronnie had his famous list of people who 'had to go',and as Foreman says,"you can't go around bumping people off willy-nilly,Ron.This is heavy s**t you're asking me to do"(Foreman disposed of McVitie,He also 'whacked' Mitchell and disposed of the body,on the request of the Twins). He says now he would have murdered the Twins before much longer. He also says he wishes he would never have met them. I suppose no matter what anybody says, the Story of the Kray twins is an interesting one.But please look at the facts here. These two lunatics caused absolute bloody mayhem wherever they went, imagine being in a pub with your wife on a quiet night out and the place going up in front of you.And don't give me none of that old-mother-hubbard that they only hurt other crims.Bull.You're talking about innocents being bottled, smashed about the floor like a football, just for being in the vicinity.I've heard a story about Ronnie opening up some blokes' face in the Carpenters Arms for simply asking him if he'd like a drink. And Reggie was a bully, make no bones about it. I used to be a bit of a fan,but the older I get and the more I read,no,no,no,no.Horrible blokes.Cornell wasn't bothered about the Twins,he would have faced any of them down in a one-on-one situation. It's folklore now about Ronnie putting a bullet through his nut.But there is a big rumour about Cornell giving Ronnie a bloody good hiding a few years before,Ronnie wasn't a hard case.He couldn't fight for toffee without something in his hand-knife,iron bar etc.Reggie was different in that respect, but chose to murder Jack McVitie-apparently a nobody,a cheap villain. What rubbish.McVitie was just in a different line of villainy to the Twins. He was also a big bloke who could handle himself.By all accounts he was a very, very good thief.(nothing to be proud of,but this is the type of people we are talking about). So Reggie does for McVitie in a basement flat, surrounded by henchmen,McVitie on his own, duped into attending a party. The woman who owned the flat was ordered out OF HER OWN HOME for the evening so the event could take place.HER YOUNG KIDS WERE IN BED UPSTAIRS ASLEEP.
The Kray Twins.Legends.Are you sure?Bloody disgusting human beings if you ask me.Bullies, pure and simple.
