Good article Arthur. I thought that Only When I Laugh was mid 80s I wasn't too keen on it back in the day but I wouldn't mind seeing it again as I like James Bolam.

I thought it was later in the 80s as well, I think it must've been repeated a lot like Rising Damp. I found it a bit depressing & like Duty Free, whose characters seemed to be permanently on holiday, you wouldn't have people in hospital for such a long stretch, especially as they didn't seem ill. It's dated badly as the public are now much wiser & cynical re the NHS, I think it costs £300 a day or thereabouts to keep 1 person in a hospital bed.

I remember watching it (Only When I Laugh) around late 1981 with the family. At the time my parents didn't find it very funny and I was probably too young to understand the humour anyway.

Don't remember the episodes storylines and I didn't like the theme tune because when something not very happy had happened in my old workplace office, a woman I couldn't stand used to rub it in, by singing the blooming words.............

I often find that when I give some TV series a try, Having dismissed them in the past, they're not as bad as I thought they would be. I've misjudged quite a few things. There are other series that still don't really appeal to me even though I don't actually dislike them. I'm not really a fan of things like Bergerac or Lovejoy for example. Charles.

Know the feeling. Sometimes it really doesnt matter how popular it is the series just doesn't float your boat.

Yes, I remember Only when I laugh not being very good. Richard Wilson was in it too if I remember.
