I've just spent most of the evening going through a series of pages on Flickr that contains about 1300 photos taken during 1988, of the docklands development areas and concentrating quite a bit on the Docklands Light Railway from that time.
>>> Docklands and DLR <<<
The photos give a good idea of the areas as they were before the developments really took over and gave us the London Docklands as they are today with Canary Wharf and the associated high-rise developments.
It is also work looking at for the period cars of the time as well.
I'd recommend getting a cuppa before you start...
Sam.

Now this just hits the spot Sam. Brilliant find mate. That's me tiled in for the next couple of hours while I look through these.
Cheers mate. There's a pint in the TRA waiting for you

Cheers Sam, I remember the desolate area that the Docklands was in the early 80's shortly after the last of the docks had closed. By the end of the decade the whole area was one humongous building site, mainly in the Canary Wharf area. There really is still a lot of land to be redeveloped, the businesses with large premises alongside the river have realised its vastly profitable to build luxury apartments on their land rather than continue operations.

Thanks for this info Sam. Not too familiar with the locations as I rarely go to London & having grown up in the NE didn't get there when these pics were taken but I do like looking at "old" images (can't believe these can be classed as old or period, Christ I'm old!!) especially the cars.
Some of the buildings have that "Sweeney" feel to them too; dirty & gritty which makes them all the more viewable.
Very enjoyable

Good pics there Sam,nice find.I'm not at all familiar with the area but as Steve Austin said, some of those pics are very Sweeney-like,very of their time, and I think all of us on the forum would find these interesting.

I guess I'm "lucky" enough to work in the area so now know it quite well.
I first started going to the docklands area in late '89 working on some development projects in the Isle Of Dogs area so have seen the progress over the years but amazingly there are still some remnants of the area that remain.
I wanted to do some Then and Now pics here but the account and all photos are protected so I can't post the images here. However, selecting some from the first page there are some pictures with locations that can be identified with their associated Google links for the Now shots:
Then: Duthie Street E14
Now: Thames Path (NE extension)
Then: Leamouth Road E14
Now: Leamouth Road E14
Then: Chatsworth Place E14
Now: Preston Road E14
Then: Orchard Place E14
Now: Orchard Place E14
Knowing the DLR as well as I do, there are also significant reworks to some of the stations shown too but they'll have to be for another day for the Now pics.
Sam.

Yes Regan , The Beehive looks a proper old east end boozer. I notice a lot of the pictures on page 3 are taken in the early 90's judging by the car registrations and the areas still look like wasteland some 10 years into the Docklands project.

Is it just me or does anyone else prefer it when it was gritty, run down and Sweeney like before it became bland and corporatised?
