Agree and somehow the commentators had real character.
Examples David Coleman, Brian Moore, Barry Davies, John, Motson, Gerald Sindstadt, Keith Macklin.

They certainly were the voices stan that were synonymous with the game back then.
Alongside those you mention a younger John Motson and of course Kenneth Wolstenholme who finished his career in the 70's.
There were also lower profile reporters and commentators such as David Icke and Tony Gubba.

Bury are my team, a history of struggling in divisions 3 and 4, but enjoyable nonetheless. When I was a kid, I didn't take much notice of football but, suddenly got into it when I was 13,in 1973 and started going to matches, my first game was division 4 Bury v Colchester in September 73. A few memorable matches as i quite quickly became a massive football fan and loved 70s football, I remember like it was yesterday an FA cup 3rd round replay in January 76, Bury brought Boro back to Gigg lane for a replay and were 2-0 down after 5 minutes, but came back to win 3-2!
Also, a lad in my class at school was a massive Man City fan so when bury were away I would go to Maine Road with him and saw some decent stuff there. My interest in the game waned in the 80s and I stopped going to matches for several years but I got it back in the 90s but it's not the same as earlier, too much money in it now I'm afraid.

Well I remember this Ipswich - turned my team Chelsea over regularly!
Was behind the goal at Portman Road to see an Emplyn Hughes screamer hit the net in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool.
Recall the pitch was said to be the best in the league.

They were a very good side indeed in that mid 70's to early 80's period. It a shame that the club had to persistently sell their best players though, and when Bobby Robson took the England job things unravelled at the club. There's no doubt though that most of the players you mentioned were top class, and they proved it by playing well for the bigger clubs they moved to and also at international level.

Sad news this weekend about Howard Kendall, former player and manager of Everton FC.69 years old,no age really.Very successful at Everton when I was a lad,if I'm not mistaken led them to a title, and a few trophies. One that springs to mind is them turning over Graham Taylors' Watford in the FA Cup Final......was it 1984?Andy Gray scored but if I remember rightly he seemed to nod it out of the keepers' hands to score. In his later years in the game he took over for a short while at my club,Notts County. However,he wasn't there too long, from some of the stories I heard Kendall was bad on the drink. If this has any bearing on his early death I don't know. But sad news, another well known name gone.

Yes you are correct Supe. He lead Everton to two First Division titles, as well as an FA Cup triumph and European Cup Winners' Cup win. I remember the FA Cup final of 84 against Watford that you speak of and i also remember they had some cracking games against a Liverpool side also riding high at the time.
