Watched this on catch up and just wondering if anyone else on here caught this drama based on Iain Banks novel.
Similar in feel to The Crow Road Stewart Gilmour (Christian Cooke) returns to Stonemouth, a fictional seaport town north of Abderdeen for the funeral of his best friend Callum Murston who has (seemingly) committed suicide. Stonemouth itself is controlled by two rival gangs, the Murstons and the MacAvetts. Callum’s father Don Murston (Peter Mullan) see’s himself as the local crime boss and tries to runn the town with the help of associated lackey’s like Powell Imrie (Brian Gleeson) and his two sons. It’s been five years since Stewart has set foot in Stonemouth. Once engaged to Don’s daughter Ellie (Charlotte Spencer) a sexual indiscretion at a wedding has seen him run out of town by the Murston’s and he is now working in London. Don has ‘allowed’ Stewart to return to Stonemouth for two days to attend Callum’s funeral on the proviso he leaves when expected to and makes no contact with Ellie. Stewart agrees to this but circumstances, doubts in his mind about Callum committing suicide and a rekindling of his relationship with Ellie put him on a collision course with the Murston’s, MacAvetts, friends and family as he discovers the truth (and lies) about many things in Stonemouth.
Alright Stonemouth isn’t quite on a par with anything that normally features on these boards and Peter Mullan (the Don Murston character) does lift this from a average drama to fairly good. But on the whole I did quite like it and there were also some decent performances from the supporting cast too. I would look out for it again if it were repeated. I’m also interested in getting the book it was based on just to see whether that is better and it’s been one of the best 2-part drama’s I’ve seen for years – especially so with all the period shite that’s bombarding the BBC/ITV at the moment.
Any thoughts.
