What do you make of the singles chart these days ? There are some folk who say its well past its best (I'm one of them) and it should stop. For me it all got silly when downloads were included and songs charted without being (Re)released as singles (usually old stuff). I just don't think the the chart is that relevant anymore. The younger generations seem to source their music from other places more often than not. I mean who actually listens to the chart rundown in their household on a Sunday evening any more On a more positive note I was pleased to learn recently that sales of Music on Vinyl have increased to a 18 year high: www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30216638Thats good news about the Vinyl sales increase. I've still got hundreds of records in the cupboard.

I don't really pay attention to it nowadays. Full of one hit wonders that'll be working in McDonald's this time next year. I think its had its day sadly.

What do you listen to BG ?
My kids have the modern stuff on the radio all the while but there's little or nothing that grabs my attention for the right reason nowadays.
60's 70's & 80's for me all the way - hence this forum.

I listen to Radio 2 when I can Gene. I still have my vinyl from the 70s, 80s and 90s that I regularly put on.. Mostly punky sort of stuff really. Not much modern stuff does it for me.

I must be getting old,I find myself being just like my own Dad was with me when talking to my young daughter about the music in the charts today (she's only 6).I find myself saying "what's this rubbish?"...."who sings this?"...."look at the state of this lot"(if the act are on the TV)."are these lot supposed to be good, are they?"...stuff like that.I have to admit that aside from Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller, nothing really interests me in the modern singles charts. It's also a shame that the female artists seem to feel the need to make their music videos as borderline porn. Not good for the young girls they influence. It's tried and tested that sex sells, but call me old fashioned-I think the music should stand up on its' own without the vocalist prancing around in underwear whilst miming along.(soap box moment over).

I can see the reasons why downloads are included in the singles chart and lets face it ‘physical’ singles are very much a niche product you get from independent shops like Rough Trade rather than HMV. However I feel rather than opening up opportunities downloads have stifled new music (acts and genres) and increased the ’establishments’ power over the music industry. I honestly feel there was a concerted effort within the music industry (Simon Cowell and the likes of him) to change the UK music scene away from the more creative dance and indie acts we had in the 1990’s to something we have now which resembles the US chart with clean-cut bland bankable stars that have a global appeal and dismiss everything else.
I used to listen to the chart nearly every week up to about 2003 but since then I sort of gave up as I noticed a lot of acts in the chart all seemed very samey. They’re either overblown balladry types usually doing poor cover versions – thanks to tosh like X-Factor and The Voice etc., boring R&B/Rap acts retreading the same old ‘gangsta’ crap which has been stale since 1992, indie-by-numbers/metal/MOR rock acts which sound the same and like their influences and don’t really do anything out of the ordinary. Gawd they even make Oasis look like The Fall FFS! Worst of all we're now getting a lot more re-releases of old records which because of some film or TV programme become popular again. Even if I like them I feel they've had their time in the chart in the past not now!
I think the download criteria where anything (from iTunes to YouTube) is eligible for the chart is wrong too. It should have the same criteria that they used had with physical singles where the download has to be a commercial release and if deleted or unavailable shouldn’t be eligible for the chart. This would cut the crap of the same old songs being in the singles chart for 30-40 odd weeks that the chart seems to have now. It would also give new acts/music more of a chance in the chart as I honestly don’t see where the ‘new’ Stone Roses, Orbital’s, Primal Scream’s, Massive Attack’s, Underworld’s or anything that’s a little off the wall and interesting are coming from these days!
I get the feeling young people are more accepting of crap music which is being promoted to them. This is as old as the singles chart but if I was 18 now would I really want a late 50 something old like Simon Cowell and the likes of them shaping their agenda(s) on me rather than going out there and finding my own music and social agenda? Don’t get me wrong there has been some good new music over the last decade – Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, The Juan McLean, Editors, Ladytron, Bloc Party, Factory Floor, Doves, Azari & III, Slam/Soma Records etc. but none of this stuff is really being featured on the Top 40 rundown rightly or wrongly.
If the kids like the bland, boring and banal that’s being served to them then fine perhaps this period is their greatest time musically right now. Me I just don’t get it or like it... perhaps I’m at an age that I shouldn’t.

Or down at The Fat Ox. Mind you I do recall your rendition of Billy Fury, Halfway to Paradise........ I was in the Fat Ox the day they pulled it down. I stood there with my mate Bob as the bulldozer waded in and thought - "There goes yesterday..."
Bob's still got the dartboard as well.
