I watched this episode late last night and think that it is another one of the highlights of series 4, like Money Money Money, it is up there with the best. Filmed in early 1978, its one of those ones where Regan gets in a bit higher than his pay grade with the Special Branch chief's involvement in the cover up, but, being Jack, that doesn't stop him.
At that time, I do remember a bit of stuff in the media about ex military types with little private armies involved with mercenaries, usually in Africa, and the episode picked up on this. Richard Wilson was OK as a kind of Haskins substitute too.
The "Leroy baby" parts date it a little but if you can look past those it is a good episode. Featuring another actor that appeared in two episodes; John Steedman who also appeared in The Placer as Andrew Barkis. He is an evil looking chap, wouldn't want to cross him, even with my bionic arm
Old Leroy certainly put up a fight there Taggart was lucky wasn't he ? I wouldn't trust a Renault to keep the wind out let alone some shot
I first saw this action scene on youtube where it was part of an ITV documentary from 1985 called Television. This particular edition was about violence on TV and when I saw this particular clip, I thought it was from Taggart with our heroic Scottish detective taking on a mudd-er-er armed with a shotgun . Not so long after, I discovered it was from Strangers made before Taggart.
