Yes The way Reagan is in the episode sets that tone .
I still think the episode is decent for the series .
But Victims is the real class act in series 4

Series four is a bit hit and miss for me, but I would rank this episode as one of the brighter lights of the series. Given this was the last series of The Sweeney, and that maybe Regan's character had seemed even more world weary and certainly lacking some of the vigour of the early series, the link between his 'mental plight' and that of the character of Red makes for some clever writing and an entertaing story. I also like the way in which the writer spends much of the episode examining the relationship between Red and his former wife and current squeeze. There are thus even comparisons to make between Regan's character and Red in their private life.

Interesting bit of trivia about Trust Red is that, much later in life in 1999, the writer of the episode Richard Harris ended up marrying Hilary Crane who plays Redgrave's ex wife. They met on the tv comedy Harris wrote 'Outside Edge'.

I agree that series 4 is a bit hit and miss, and for me, Trust Red is one of the misses. There are a few weaklings in Series 4 yes. Trust Red I have never particularly liked but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, my lack of interest in it is mainly due to John Ronane's portrayal of Red. On the plus side for me in Series 4 are the excellent Nightmare, Messenger Of The Gods and Victims. Gene.

Interesting viewpoints. I've always liked this episode, including the Red character.
I like the bit where Jack is faced by the guy armed with bottle or knife which makes him think about the future and where he goes to meet Red. Watching it gives me a sense that all this going to end which of course it did a few episodes later.

John Ronane is a bit nondescript & vacant looking, maybe that's why he was chosen for the part of a man having a midlife crisis, he reminds me of Nigel Green, another stony faced actor who always looked a bit miserable.
It was a surprise to read that Ronane was one of the many actors who tested for the part of James Bond!
