I remember taping this episode off G+ in 2003 and it was the first one I saw featuring Cookie. Thanks to George Sweeney's performance, I found him an odious, thoroughly nasty and vicious character but I think he gave a better performance in Taste Of Fear. A bit more reserved but still intimidating.
The forest climax was explosive and the music playing over it before Regan is attacked and Frenzy kicks in reminded me slightly of Morse.

When you think about it the ending is a bit ironic. A squad of highly trained officers almost made mugs off by one man using the clever trick of hiding behind trees, to misquote Jack!

What rotten luck. Flicked ITV4 on to watch some Sweeney, just now, and the dreadful 'On The Run' episode is on. All about opinions but my choice for the the worst ever episode. Even George Sweeney can't save it. Light years away from the brilliant 'Taste Of Fear'.

The end OTR is lazy, making Cook out to be some sort of expert in jungle warfare or unarmed combat whereas in reality he's just jumping out of bushes. Also when was he sprung anyway, he was a nobody with no money was the impression I had. I'm sure there's a squad member who really likes this episode though so I'm expecting some comeback! Can't remember who it is though.

I should have just put the dvd on, as it was cut to ribbons, the picture quality was awful and it was broadcast cropped to fit 16:9. The Saint

If you were watching this when it was first broadcast you'd be seeing it weeks after 'Taste Of Fear', I think you'd see Cook & you'd be thinking 'I remember him' & so Roger Marshall probably thought 'let's up the ante' & make Cook an all out nutter. In retrospect I think it would've been more interesting to make Cook a PTSD casualty rather than just a psycho.
'On The Run' is very reminiscent of 'First Blood' towards the end where Cook, camo-ed & tooled up picks off the coppers in the woods. Although the film was later in 1982 David Morrell's novel of 'First Blood' came out in 1972, maybe Roger Marshall had read it?
